I have a 29 gallon tank with 15 neons, a clown pleco and a betta. They all were living quite happily. The roblem was neons do't eat much and i was gravel vacing after almost every feeding so I decided to add five spotted cories. Things were great for three days then I awoke to find three cories dead. They all appeared normal except for a deep red marking on their sides. I couldn't figure were it came from as they were all in the open nowhere near either the filter or heater. All my water tests came back as expected. I was at a loss. That night I shut off all the aquarium lights and had the kitchen light on. It provided enough light to vaguely see inside the tanks and I was trying to watch my BGK in the 120 gallon tank. I then was leaving the room and saw one of the cories lyijng peacefully near the glass and I stopped contemplating wether or not to move the two remaining cories into the 120 allon when right before my eyes the betta dive bombed the cory. I was stunned and before I was able to even get the net in the tank the dive bomb occurred atleast twice more. Needless to say he was dead before I got him out and have since moved the last cory. Has anyone else experienced this type of behavior? Why does he tolerate the neons and pleco but not the cories?

i guess he just didn't like the change?

if you have always had him with the neons and pleco he maybe "grew up" with them and is used to them and how the territory is shared out, the cories upset the balance?

i have only ever seen such violence from a betta when some thing that looks likes a betta eg guppy is in the tank.

sorry though not a good experience! if he now has a taste for blood maybe think about getting him his own little tank?

He hasn't bothered the neons at all. He seems to be completely indifferent to them. The pleco is always inside the rock cave and for some reason the betta never goes in there. So come to think of it I have never actually seen these two interact and they have been together about 8 months. I have several soft fake plants and the betta likes to hang in thier. He always gave the apearance of a stalking predator when doing this but like I said no outward signs of aggression were ever present. I even joked with my son that he was a wanna be lion waiting in the highgrass.

I would think he did not like the new intruders into his terrority.

That is the reason I will be adding my M Betta last to my 11g

The Betta might have his own territory & he didn't like others around.

I also had the same problem, when i added some new Corydoras, but now i am thinking of a 90% Corydoras tank, with some Tetra's.

i have a crown tail male, and he is the most aggressive fish i ever did lay my eyes on i tried to breed him in a full 10 gallon (lower the water with sucking up yuckies while i wait for them to breed) i left her in a 1 gallon floating, for must have been 2 weeks, i let her out, and he dident show off for her, he chased her, grabbed her fins and shook her till her fins gave loose yea, i dubbed him the unbreedable%) there is no way i can ever trust him to breed, even in a 100 gallon in his mind all he wants to do is kill

I have kept bettas in both thier own 5 gallon tanks and mixed in with my community tanks since I started fish keeping and the only other time I had problems was over ten years ago when a betta killed a pair of angels. As the years went on they seemed to get more and more docile with each purchase. I was begining to wonder if all the aquarium breeding was dilluting their natural born aggressions. I guess this little fellow destroyed that theory.

i've found the best way to add a male betta to any community tank, is to add him last.

i have had this same problem. except my last fish to add was some CAE's, and the betta just went nuts after them. he left his other mates alone. just didnt like them.

and now i have also proven this, as well, where a friend of mine has a community tank, and she added the betta last. given he claimed what they we're around and did chase them if they got close. but didnt constantaly attack them.

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction
