This is the first time i've had a crowntail, my LFS has just started to carry them. I think he looks ok (picked the best looking one), but I have to admit i'm not sure what the standards are for CT's. So what does everyone think? Is this guy a good specimen or just okay?

My LFS has a very similar Betta and all they could tell me is that he could be a bit more aggressive than most of the other Bettas. So I left him there.

Chris, why would you not consider that show standard? Very rounded profile, nice large anal fin, lots of rays, looks good to me.

I know nothing about show standards or judging for M Bettas. Chris apprently you do can you please explain it so that I can as well as others understand it fully. Some good examples with your comments would be appreciated.

I have been involved with Orchids and Judging and I can assure it takes many years of hard work and study to become a Judge. What is involved in becoming a judge for Aquarium fish in general, and what training do they do.

I know this is a blurry pic, but I think it really shows how nice he is. I'm sure he's not a show fish, but he is beautiful. Thanks for the replies everyone.

the color is multi, and often looked down. with show fish, and even more with fancy bettas, the fry should be ket serperate. the fin rays are not straight and it looks as if fin damage has occured and the fins are not even.

at first on the first picture, it looks like that fish isn't strong enough to holds itself, but in the second pic he looks fine.

plus in big shows, winning is very hard with over seas bettas with the best blood line like yin etc.... but for smaller shows it does have a chance.

nice fishy! definately one to show off!

Chris is right, he does have some faults but for a pet shop fishy, what more could you ask for? he is pretty impressive. As for specific faults, his anal marginally too long, webbing possibly too far up the rays (unfortunately the biggie with CTs, if the webbing comes more than 2/3rds of the way up the rays, the fish is disqualified), and the dorsal is a little bit too small for the rest of the finnage. If you are going to breed him, look from a female that can help rectify these, if not, don't sweat it

Check out that tail! *dribble* I'd be proud to have that fish in my collection, he is definately a good find! those ray groupings are very even, and check out that spread! its got to be close to 175*! And fish are also marked on deportment, the way he is holding himself in that last photo I imagine he'd give even purpose-bred showfish a run for their money. About the only thing that upsets the picure is the damage to that pair of rays up top, but with a bit of time they should come back to full length bit of good food and good water and Bobs your uncle

Fantastic little man, I'd definately give him a spot where he can show off to guests If you like... I mean, you could postpak him over to me I have a spot on my coffee table...
