looks like a gut thing more than dropsy. thats pretty severe too. I'd fast him for a day or two and see if it relaxes any. Perhaps try a bath of epsom salts?

PH out of the tap is about 8.5. I've had success getting it down and keeping it down around 6.5-7.0 with acid buffer. My plan is to treat gallon jugs of water that she can use for water changes.

Good idea on cleaning the tank out, I didn't think of doing that.

I felt bad for her, she's very diligent at maintaining her tank and was disappointed when he died. She's ready to try again though.

Yes, sterilize everything that was in the tank, the decorations and all. If you can do it, I would also advice trying bottled water until you can find a good way of filtering the tap you use. It is not a pleasant experience to loose a fish this way (had to euthanize mine).
I hope your new fish has a long and health life.

Mike, rinse the contents of the tank in very hot water on the off chance it was a bug that caused the swelling.

Thanks, she'll be getting another one probably this weekend. I'm going to try to make up water with a lower ph that she can use for water changes. That was the only parameter that seemed to be out of wack.

I had a problem like that. The betta started to develop tumors on the tail that were surgically removed, but then months later the belly was just like that. He died from the same thing of your betta.

I suspect that while bettas SEEM to resist bad water parameters, they develop those tumors after a while. The betta I had was LEFT in a mayonaise jar with very fouled water... it smelt really awful.

I think that made him to have those tumors after a while.

i would think that would happen, problems with the baldder, idk if feeding peas has anything to do with that. i have never feed my bettas peas. if u are looking to fatten up your bettas, try color bits, i use, and it will make bettas fatter, but not to a point where they get that huge, sry for your lose, but dont give up.

I had a female betta that had a thing that looked a lot like that, it grew very fast. I believe it was a tumor. I hope that is not what is wrong with your fish. There could be something going on with your water.

Would appreciate some help with my daughter's betta.

She's had him about a year in a heated/filtered 5 gal tank. Temp is about 80, nitrites/ammonia is 0, nitrates are around 30, ph is a bit high at 8+. She does 40-50% water changes once a week.

We got back from a 2 week vacation (he was fed once a day while we were gone) and his belly was bloated. She's been feeding him less betta pellets and trying to get him to eat pieces of peas which he has eaten some of. He's still somewhat active but seems to be getting more lethargic.

Is there anything we can do??????

thanks,

Mike

cant tell if dropsy, but maybe it is having a bladder stuck-age.

Heres a link to a pic. Sorry it's not that clear but you can get the idea of the swelling and wher it is.

Thanks very much for the help

Yes he's a male so he can't be eggbound. I'm at work so I'll call home and tell Brooke not to feed him for a couple days. I left pretty specific instructions on how to feed while we were away so I don't think he over ate but I guess it's possible. I'll try and get a pic up.

Thanks,

Mike

i think u should not feed it for like 2 days that way it has time to pass the food through but if that dosent work try the pease or vice versa

Is it possible the people were overfeeding while you were gone?

Don't feed the fish for 2 days, or only feed it pea or daphnia to try to move the food through.

I assume its a male and there is no chance of it being eggbound?

If you can post a photo it would help.

Doesn't look like a pinecone but more like his belly is just fat, but I'll have to take a closer look to be 100% sure.
