I have a 2.5 G tank sitting empty! The shock! The Horror!

I am not going to rush this as I haven't had much luck with Bettas lately.I want to think carefully about every step! (half the fun)and persuade the vute guy at the LFS to find a really good betta.

in your betta tanks that you do Weekly Water changes on do you have substrate and Plants? heater? filter?

(Can it work on such a small tank? gravel just harbours yuckiness)

Below are a range of choices. pick what you believe to the best Pet Betta set up (not breeding, just a normal LFS betta whom I will love to bits like I did Joey)

assume Weekly water change is a given, and there is no tank light, just a desk light on for about 6 hours. The tank is 2.5G.

Thank you for Voting

1 sword plant, and some duck weed, should do for the plants, the "azoo" company makes a small power filter, for ther tanks, but can work usually on any tank, at the "pet land disscount" company, they have packaged aquarium rocks, which is absolutly lovely, in tank set-ups. gravel, is up to u. and there is another product from azoo, which is a small tank heater, that can be seen on [link=http://www.drsfostersmith.com]http://www.drsfostersmith.com" style="COLOR: #FFFF00[/link] is should do well on the small tank.

so Darth Vadar, do you think from what Bensaf says that if I planted the tank, i wouldn't have to do Weekly Wc? I thought they were essential for Bettas? Esp in such a small tank?

i would think maybe i would need more light. hmmm. the cogs are whirling......

cheers

I used to keep bettas in 2.5g tanks but after my most recent experience I may not try again.

I had the tanks set up with gravel and plants, no heater but with the light the temp remained constant, no filter but weekly water changes.

My last betta purchase was from a lcs and the poor thing look so sad in the 2.5g, as a last resort I moved him into my 6g. You can take a look at [link=this thread]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Advanced%20Betta%20Care/63034.html?200508161007" style="COLOR: #99FF33[/link] to see before and after pics.

I'm not recommending against a 2.5g, I apparently ended up with a betta who much preferred a larger tank with some friends

I am very close to finishing exactly that in a 11G for my Betta. To do this properly it can cost big $$$ but it will be worth it when it is finished.

I have succecfully kept a simese fighter fish in a 2 gallon tank for over a year with absolutely no problems. they are such a lovely fish arne't they? amazing personality's. anyways here is my opinion. there is no reason not to have tank decor and gravel. these make the tank look nice and give the fish some privacy. one piece of decor i know that betta's love, is a cave, barrel decoration or such place that they can actually snuggle down into. betta's eat extremely little therefor have very little waste. a filter is not needed and is only a waste of space and money. there should be no leftover food from feeding so forget the snail. snails strangely enough exrete a lot of waste into the water and will do more damage than good. you cannot have plants in a small aquarium especially without a CO2 machine. i've read that plants without the neccessary requirement will actually kill your fish (something about changing the levels of oxygen vs CO2). A heater is also not neccesary providing the temp is not too low or fluctuating too quickly. A thermometer is an absolute must to monitor temp. Betta's do not NEED heat although they DO prefer it. I found my betta was much more active in a heated aquarium.
Betta's are among the easiest and cheapest fish to keep, I do not doubt you'll have many hours of fun.
p.s. they'll also listen in rapt attention to your story's and jokes.
