I bought 2 very, very pretty male Endlers. They are a lot, lot smaller than your average guppy. Should I worry about bolivan rams eating them. I didn't think of that when I bought them.

Also, LFS told me they won't inter breed with regular guppys. The profile here says they will inter breed. Which source of info is correct?

Thanks, Robyn

Cheers

I wouldnt worry too much about the bolivian rams eating the endlers. They may hassle them if they start breeding, but they are generally pretty peaceful.

Endlers will interbreed with normal guppies. You can see many of the larger normal guppies with the distinctive endlers spots and patterns.

Good luck

Robyn,

I completely agree with Dangerous Dave, here are a few additional thoughts:

- Every fish will eat every fish (maybe with the exception of pure plant eaters) if the occasion arised. Endlers are a) too big and b) too fast for the Rams and they would not chase after them.

- Endlers are Guppies, or at least that is what you hear when you talk to different sources. Various species of fish have developed differently over time based on their location. When a species gets separated (for example by expansion and eventual cut-offs from the main group for, let's say, water flow disruptions) then the individual strains have to handle their environment differently. One may be now in colder water, or the food source is different. Anyway, one thing is for sure, Endlers and Guppies interbreed. This is, by most people, not considered a good thing as the resulting fry are hybrids. Some people insist that Endlers are endangered, although I recently read something else.

Just some thoughts,

Ingo

There is a lot of debate about Endler's being a separate species, and like Little Fish said, about them being endangered. I would personally err on the side of caution and treat them as such since they will interbreed.

They're definitely very nice looking fish

years back i did cross breed a male endler to a fancy female guppy and the fry were odd. so they will breed.

but on a good note, i wasan't aware of the shortage, and only breed fancy guppies together and wild endlers together.

Thanks for the replies.

I now have a problem - I don't want them to interbreed & in my current set-up, I'm not sure I have a spot for them. Darn LFS promised me they wouldn't interbreed. I specifically asked that question.

So, a new question. Are Endlers small enough to be eaten by Congo Tetras or Pelvicachromis Taeniatus Dehane. Dehane's are cousins to the Kribs, so I think maybe similar tendencies, but I've never kept either before, so I don't really know?????

So maybe the question is, would a Krib or a Congo Tetra eat an Endler?

Cheers

Robyn,

I have no idea if they would or not.

But to be honest, Endlers are best kept in a species tank

They might not eat them, but I know that if your kribs start breeding, and your tank is anything less than 4 feet, the kribs will harrass the endlers probably to the point of death.

ok, seems I have a problem with where to put these fish.

It will probably be a choice of keeping the Endlers or my regular guppys.

thanks for advice

Robyn,

Well, you could always opt for another small tank, low tech planted. A 10G would be enough to house 5 Endlers easily.

Oh, I read today in the Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine (July Issue 2006) a column called "Livebearers Unlimited" by Ted Coletti. He is a witty writer and also a director of the ALA,the American Livebearer Association. This month's column was about guppy history in the hobby and one part says "And one wild metallic strain of guppy known as Endler's livebearer developed a cult following." So, if he calls them guppies than we can assume that this is what they are. Case closed ,

I like these endlers so much, I might investigate giving away my regular guppies, although I've only found one LFS in Sydney that seems to stock endlers. Thanks all for the advice.

EDIT: Temporarily moved these Endlers into my husband's tank until I figure out what to do with them.

Cheers
