How many platy would be comfy in a 63 liter tank (17 gallons almost). I am thinking 6 (3 coral and 3 dalmation) plus maybe one fish that would be good for population control, which I would appreciate suggestions on what to get for that.

The tank will become pretty heavily planted in about 3 months, has 2 decorations, and medium gravel. If that's any help.

Please reply soon, I know it's the holidays though...

I would say 6 would be ok, you'll want to get 2 males and 4 females to keep the nipping down. As for population control a dwarf gourami would be more then happy to snack on a few fry. It would be rather full and you wouldn't be able to add anything else, but if your good with water changes everything should be fine.

I agree with John

IME platies eat their own fry. You could try just the platies if you'd like and see how it goes. A dwarf gourami is a good-sized suggestion for your tank.

i belive you could add more than 6 if you wanted, remember the 1 inch per gallon rule. Also you might want to think of some catfish to keep the bottom clean, I would suggest some corys, they are great fish and very active. The parent fish should help keep the population down, but if you want something else any community fish should work.
hope this helps

Thanks! I went ahead and got 3 dalmation platy to go with my 3 red coral (2 female, one male for each type) I have 3 baby red corals too, 2 are 4 months old and 1 is 2 months old (all female).. and I got a blue dwarf gourami (male). I'm excited..

Should I leave the babies in the other tank for now and just transfer the 3 adult red coral platy after quarantine time for the new ones is up? I don't know if they will get stressed easier or not.

It's quite planted so i expect 1 -3 babies to survive every 3 months, heheh.. or more. We'll see. I hope the gourami enjoys its fresh platy fry buffet, ]
