Hi

I have two male sailfin mollies in my tank and they fight like crazy! I have kept mollies before and found them easy going. Is this because there are just two males? Is there supposed to be females in the tank to calm them down? I am apprehensive to introduce any in case they tear them apart. Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Hello, and welcome to FP !

These fish aren't known to be 'scrappy' fish, however...

In any tank a pecking order is quickly made. One fish will need to establish that he is king, and with your 2 being the same species, the king will be the alpha male.

If you added a female right now this would give the alpha male some distraction, but also he will bully the other male even more to further show dominance. Catch 22.

If lack if tank space / territories / hiding spots is a factor, the aggression only gets worse.

How many gallons is your tank ?

How big is that tank to start off with?
Will it allow for breeding pairs?

What you could do is swap the most aggressive male for at least two females or even three females. This will certainly stop all problems but will cause more if you do not have the size tank for all the fry you soon will have.

I have always removed aggresive fish from my tanks over the years as in my opinion they can cause far more problems than they are worth$$. Some fish are just aggressive and there is not much you can do about it.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Hi there,
Male mollies will often fight if there
are no females. I have found guppies do this as well.
Youre best to add a couple females, minimum of
2 per male, so 4 females minimum.

However, depends on the size of the tank.
Sailfin mollies reach 5-6 inches, so need
a minimum tank size of 30g.
