I have heard that platies are a little more harder to bread than mollies of guppies is this true?

Thanks!

I have heard questions like this when reffering to other livebearers. The truth of the matter is that all livebearers will mate when the water conditions are good and when there is enough food Livebearers require nothing special for mating other than the above listed items. So I guess what I am getting at is no, platies will mate just as readily as mollies and guppies. Hope this helps!

I concur. I've had two different types of platies since I started over a year ago (X. maculatus and X. xiphophorus) and all you need is a male, a female, and patience.

They breed like rabbits.

I agree. They breed like rabbits. The hard part comes after the newborns are in your tank. Mum and dad will see them as a snack.

Try having a ratio of 3 females to 1 male. That might help, at least in de-stressing the females.

crazyred, you are lucky. I see the little fry for no more than a week at a time. Someone always eats them. I would love one day to see a sneaky, clever little one outsmart the other fish & survive.

Cheers

I gave away literally tons of my X. maculatus mickey mouse platies....both blue and orange. My X. variatus have been succesful at breeding and fry survival, but I have kept all of their babies so far. I just love their coloration (blue parrot)
