Say if i had 2 10 gallons...1 for 1 male / 3 Female and the other one for the fry, how many fry could i keep in the 10 gallon and how long. Most likely both will be barebottom for easy maintenance. Also is that good ratio for a 10 gallon or could i add more guppies?

In a 10 gallon you could have more than that. The ratio for guppies is: 1:2 so I would get 3 males and 6 females. Then they can choose which female they want. As for the fry tank, I don't really know much about that, sorry.

Good Luck!

IMO you could keep alot of frys in a 10 gallon tank. I kept about 20-30 frys in a 2.5 gallon for about a month, i feed them flakes crushed into a powder. I kept 3 of them and gave the rest to my LFS. Had bare bottom in the 2.5. I would suggest gravel for the adult tank to help keep a good bioload, also where are you going to put the frys when they get bigger?

p.s. would not suggest growing out that may frys in a small tank, it was a short term solution

you really don't want to think about how many fry you could keep in a ten gallon...more than you want to think about, really...

if you are going to get 2 ten gallons go ahead and get a 20 or 29 instead, and just play survival of the fittest...you will be full in no time just add some plants...

If you do that then I'd still only begin with 6 females and 2-3 males...it will seem empty at first but will fill up before you know it...:%)

If the two ten gallon tanks were divided into two halves you could put a male and two females in each half of one tank. Call one side the A line and the other the B line. Line breed the A and B lines for three or four generations choosing to keep the best fish. Then cross the two lines to form a C line and either cull a line or have three. Etc.

When the female is due every 28 days or big put her in one of the halves of the other tank by herself. Both tanks should be bare bottom with box or sponge filters on both sides. Clean every other filter monthly or even longer. Use plastic plants in the breader partitions or nursery partitions. Plastic is easy to remove to catch unexpected fry. Use real plants in the fry partitions. They improve water quality and are something to eat. When you find fry in the nursery partition with the female alone you can put her back in the breader partition if she is through and replace plastic plants with real plants. The nursery partition becomes a fry partition. If she is not through you can put her in a trap in the nursery partition to finish.

I have used five gallon buckets for nursery partitions and fry partitions. A drop of thirty fry will be fine in five gallons for a month or two. Larger drops need to be split.

yeah what guppy max said!!!hi its james, max knows his stuff and hes like e.f hutton, when he talks everyone listens lol!!!i sure have and have talked with him alot in other post..you can have a lot of fry for the short term in smaller tanks and when they get old enough to sex start to seperate them,if you go to sites that show large scale breeder scale setups they use small plastic containers, they are cost effective and can be set up like a regular glass tank and almost have the same clarity.. you can buy a 73qt sterilite containers at walmart for like a little less than 6 dollars and they are about a half inch taller than a 10 gal glass tank and set them up as fry tanks i have and it gives one a chance to check for any deformities while they are growing and the seperateing them or to cull as it were, this works for me and is cost effective has not harmed any of my guppies in any way and i have a lot of good looking fish...this will also help if you have designs on selling any fish back to your lfs or to give them your culls.. some times they are willing to trade for food for your other fish while they make a profit off the ones youve brought in so you can maintain your stock..look forward to seeing what you deciede
