Probably a dumb question - but i have a decent sized bowl here, plenty of java fern and spare air pump.. was wondering if I could house a few guppies in there and do big water changes weekly? anyone tried this before?

I saw at a LFS some guppies labelled as "cold water guppies" which got me thinking...!

Guppies do have a range in temps, but range of temps doesnt mean okay with room temp...remember it can change drastically in a 24 hour period.

Personally I'd say no, especially if you mix male and female for obvious reasons . That being said, how many gallons is it exactly?

Can the bowl be covered? How frequently would you be able to do water changes?

bowl can be covered - water changed as often as required - my other half works at home so all the zoo here get the best of care!

I'd never heard of "cold water guppies" before - they had them in a separate tank.. will try to stop in and get more info from the shop when i can..

Bought my son a 5 gallon all-glass mini-bow tank.

Without a heater, he has kept 2 otos, 2 platys, 3 zebras and a cory without a heater for over a year now.

I know the bowl may be quite large, but don't, please don't put the guppies or any other fish in it, please? Fish really need a tank, not just a bowl, and you should be doing water changes anyways...

As said above the water temps can dip and rise so much in one day, do you really want to risk losing your fish to something that simple?

And if by chance you do end up getting a female, it doesn't matter if you have a male with her, if she has been exposed to a male she very well maybe pregnant, and it isn't just this months drop, but dropping fry for up to 9 months from one encounter with a male

So though this sounds like an awesome idea, please don't do it, invest in a 10 gallon tank, they are really quite cheap, then your guppies will truly be happy...

A ten gallon will give you a lot more potential than a bowl. They cost only $10 usually (at petsmart new) and you will probably end up spending more on medicating the fish as they suffer in the bowl.

Oh and if you don't have a PetSmart, but have a walmart they are less than $10, not by much but they have them for cheap also:%)hml

A few guppies can live in a bowl if it is big enough.People say that guppies don't like temps below 70,however guppies are actually kept outside in the west year round. If your room stays above around 65 it will be no problem. You would be better off with all of 1 sex though, and keep up with the water changes.
