Hey, guys. My dad just got a new job working for the city at about 40k per year. In about a year or so we both want to take the plunge. So, I have a plan for a nice, spacious FOWLR tank. The tank in question would be about 90 gallons. For lighting, I've already found a nice 265w compact fluorescent fixture that would work, along with a nice wet/dry filter and an onversized protein skimmer, rated for tanks up to 300g. Is this too big, or does it even matter?

As far as inhabitants go, I've come up with this stocking plan. Foster & Smith's site says one inch for every two gallons is proper. So, here's the fish:

- Harlequin Tuskfish (10"
- Picasso Triggerfish (10"
- Antennata Lionfish (7"
- x2 Maroon Clownfish (6" each)

That's 39" total worth of fish. By F&S's rule, that would be understocked. I've checked, double-checked, and Double-Double checked, and all fish are compatible.

I wouldn't have any corals, but would a lobster work? Not a small one, mind you, but one in the range of, say, 6-7 inches? Or would the tusk cause problems? Thanks in advance!

I think you will find those fish to be not all that compatiable. Just for example, Triggers and Lionfish have a history of not getting along with each other.

Also, I think thats still too many fish for only a 90 gallon. Anyways the VERY VERY VERY general SW stocking rule(Which I don't really reccomond anyone follow anyways) is 1" of fish per 5 gallons of water. Do the math.

Right then, would lions work with puffers? You know, I could probably go for a 135g tank instead...

I would say to do the 135 if you can.

As for the lions, the problem here arises, that the lion you have chosen is hard to get to take anything other than live foods. And, when you add these live foods, the other fish will out compete him for it. If you are wanting to put a lion in with other active fish, you should consider the Volitan. As the Volitan will get the food it wants, and it will take dead foods as well, and will do so quite easily.

hat's good, because I like Volitans better. Oh well, it's still gonna be like two years before this happens.

"Congrats on Pops new job."
FYI. Most of the on line catalogs will tell you crazy stuff on stocking fish.I also just read that the fish per inch rule only applies to fish 3" and under. The larger fish take into account the hight and width of the fish.Larger fish will produce much more waste.I will post a link to the article when I find it again!

Yeah, I know about the large fish one. But, seriously though, what's the point of marine fishkeeping if all you can have is one crummy blue damselfish in a 30g tank? It's not worth my time or money, so I think I'll just stick to keeping outrageously delicate and overpriced freshwater fish, like Blue Rams.

Why would you waste a perfectly good tank on a damsel?

Well by their logic, a 30g tank is fully stocked with a pair of crummy damsels. I honestly don't see how people, even millionaires, can afford to do this? I mean, so many marine fish are ugly compared to dwarf cichlids. I'd much rather spend 10k on a big koi pond than on a 55g marine tank... I just can't justify the cost and the maintenance of a marine tank for so little of reward... to justify it, hell, you'd have to be a pathological freak.

10K on a 55gal tank? WOW. I have only a few thousand on my pair of 125s. If you think SW fish are ugly, then you really havent look hard enough.

You know what would be cool? If they invented a machine that made nay-sayers dissappear.

Any, wow. You must of gotten a good deal on your equipment, because I could easily spend $5,000 on a single F/W 125g tank.

Yup, if you quit with the negative comments and being rude..

Im closing this thread since all you want to do is put down peoples opinions when all they are trying to do is help you. All the information they are giving you is accurate and correct. If you dont want to go marine, then dont go marine.....stick with FW if that is all that interests you and that is all you can afford.

DRO

BTW, if you are going to spend 10K on a 55 gallon setup then someone is stealing your money. I have a 180 with top of the line equipment (using things that only hardcore reefers are using) and I only have 12K into it.
