I'm starting my first reef aquarium (55 gallon glass) and need suggestions for purchasing a filter. I will be using live rock and live sand and have a Turboflotor 1000 Multi Skimmer ordered. This skimmer can hang on the back of the tank or be placed in a sump.

My glass aquarium can not be drilled and I really don't know anything about plumbing and putting together pipes, etc. I'm looking for a suggestion for a filter that could easily be put outside of the tank without needing to go to a lot of trouble to connect it.

With live rock and a skimmer, you really won't need another outside filter. Unless you want to run carbon or something similar, then you can just use a simple HOB filter.

A simple HOB filter is all you really need to add. It's not needed, but nice to have.

I use an AquaClear 200 on one Tank and a Penquin 330 on another and they both work great. But if I had to chose between the two I'd have to go with the AquaClear.
Good Luck

Just go with what you have got, no need to add anything else. All you need to do is set it up with the live rock and sand and just do regular water changes.

Can I make one suggestion, if you must use a cannister filter or a HOB filter just run them when you want to polish your water (with carbon) because some of them will become like a trickle filter and become nitrate factory's, and most corals dont like nitrates.

One other suggestion that I have is if you intend to keep corals invest in a good lighting system i.e. Mh or minimum power compacts
