The prices of liverock are set to skyrocket here soon apparently. So while i wasn't going to start a salt tank till christmas am now seriously thinking of getting my live rock in ready. Because of the living organisms on the LR i'm thinking i would have to have the tank set up the same as if i were putting fish in such as heating and filtration is this correct? What would i need to set up the tank for LR? Also would i need to cycle the water for 4 weeks before i put LR in as i would fish? Also how many pound would i need in a 3ft tank? And what exactly is reef bones?

Your set up will need powerheads to move the water, and a heater to keep it warm. No need for a lot of light at this time. As for cycling, no, the live rock will cycle the water. As for how much, about 1 pound per gal of water, plus or minus depending on the type of tank you want. Reef bones are dried out live rock. Makes for a great base because it's the same rock. It will become live rock in a few months.

That answered all my questions exactly so thanks very much. Just one more thing if i put reef bones in instead of live rock, will it still cycle the water the same as the live rock would?

It will, but it will take longer. All the little critters are not on the reef bones, things like pods, bristle worms, etc. So even just a few pounds of live rock will help.

thanks for that. I'm only setting up the 3ft so i'll grab probably 5pounds one week and add 5pounds the next because at the moment it's $20 a pound. Do you think that would be enough or do have to get it all at once?

You don not need to get it all at once. Just add it over time. If you have no fish you can add what ever you want. But once you add fish you will want to add only about 5 pounds at a time.

does sound a bit high. I know that where I work we sell it for $12.50 a kilo so I would shop around befor buying it at that price

Thanks for the advice their guys, See this is what i get for knowing nothing about it. I was quoted $20 from a place in bendigo. Usually they are pretty good to me and i didnt think to question the price. Do you know any where that sells it cheaper. Also i was a bit worried about the look of the live rock for some strange reason i don't know why i was worried because i don't know anything about them or what to look for when i buy it but something just bugged me so chances are i wouldn't have been getting it from their any way. I am checking things out now though so i do know what to look for.
