I am thinking of starting my first salt water aquarium. I was wondering what size tank you would suggest for a begginer. I have one fresh water tank at this time but I would like to try out a salt. Also do you have any suggestions on good begginer fish?
Any imput is welcome
Thanks!

A general good size for a saltwater newbie would be anywhere in the neighborhood of about 55 gallons.. With smaller tanks fluctuations in water quality and parameters make for a less forgiving aquarium, so the larger tanks are more stable when starting out.. However, the best size really depends on the aquarist.. Alot of folks here started out with smaller tanks and have managed to handle it pretty well..

As for fish to begin with, there are really quite a few that would do well.. You might want to take a look online for perhaps a Bangaii Cardinalfish, Royal Grammas and the ever popular Clownfish types..

Good Luck to you, SweetPea..

55 is a good size, 30 woudl be about the smallest you want. Bigger is better.

For fish, clowns are good fish to start off. Damsels are very easy, but become a real problem when they get bigger, so should be avoided.

The easiest, and most hardiest SW for beginners is the chromis. They come in an irredescent color or green or blue. Very beautiful fish. They like to school, so you can have several together, they are very active and are constantly roaming the tank, and are probably the most inexpensive SW fish as well.

Agreed, the chromis are really fun little fish and are incredibly hardy.. If you like schooling activity in your tanks, they will definately keep you entertained.. My favorite is the green chromis (they almost irridesce under good light), but the blue are nice as well..

Thanks so much for all of your help. I will look into the fish you have listed. Im really excited about starting a salt water tank so you will probably get alot more questions from me.
Thanks again!
