I have a 20 gallon tank and I am thinking about buying bigger tank. I was thinking about going with a 30 or 46 gallon tank, also what is your opinion on hexagon tanks? What is the story with tempered glass tanks? What is a good name brand tank to buy?

Don't get the 30gal go with the 46 or BIGGER. You will regrete not going bigger! Going from 20 to 30 is just too small of a change. But the 46 is a good jump and will allow for a "DIFFERENT" type of tank than your 20.

I don't know the advantages of a Hex. tank but I allways felt there is much better viewing and show with a rectangle. Just my opinion.

Really though, go for the 46 MINIMUM even consider bigger! At least look.

Keep us informed.

I would definitely but as large as you can afford and have the room for. Most hex tanks are tall rather than long...the problem with that is you have less surface area, which equals less fish.

Any plans for what you'd like to stock it with?

If you can fit a 55, go for that, they can be found very cheep, and make for a nice sized tank. I would recomend not going with the hex tank. As stated, less surface area.

Thank you so much for the information. I had a 20 gallon tank but last week some how I got a leek and I can not find where the water is coming out. I put the fish (tetras and guppies) in my old 10 gallon tank. I had my eye on a 46 gallon Oceanic tank, the person at my LFS told me that these tanks were pretty good. I am just trying to get up enough nerve to do this. Is it every hard to maintain a larger tank?

The bigger the tank, the less maintance is involved. I have 2 125gal tanks, and they are very easy to maintain. When I had a 55gal tank, I was doing more work on that one.

Why is it less work if the tank is larger?

Bigger tanks are MUCH easier to take care of. The water quality is easier to maintain. Because of the size, little things don't affect it much. Little tanks can be quite evil. The bigger the better!

As for the hex tanks, Theresa basically answered this, but I want to agree with it. We have them where I work, and I never suggest them. Although they do look cool, the surface area is VERY small as compared to the gallonage...stay away from them if you can. If you want a cool tank design, go with a bow front. A little bit more money upfront, but nice a-scaping potential IMO.

EDIT: Oceanic and AGA (all-glass aquarium) are both excellent brands, Oceanic being a little more pricey I believe.

Oceanic, Perfecto and Hagen are good brands. I originally wanted the hagen, but went with the perfecto. It was hundred less dollar. The perfecto tank when bought with a perfecto stand(I didn't buy one, I made my own) comes with a 20 year warranty. I know this warranty applies to the larger tanks, but I can't remember if starts at the 40 and up or the 60 and up. As stated above the jump from the 20 to 30 would not make as much difference as you would probably like, but a jump to a 46 or 50 would.
