My parents made me promise that after we got rid of one of our couches to put a 4' reef tank that I would not turn the den into a complete fish room.

They should have known that was a terrible promise to make.

Anyway...I'm sort of unhappy with where the tank is b/c of the lack of room I have to work in it.

We need to do some creative thinking...so I figured I'd throw my thoughts out there. This thread might be better in another forum, idk, but it was just easier to stick it here for now.

So, here's the "fish" room, aka our den, from me standing in the kitchen, which is just one step up from the den.

Now, the floors are concrete, which is why we didn't really consider drilling through them and plumbing downstairs, to our basement. But...new idea. From this picture, look at the right wall (the one where the couch is). Behind that wall is our garage...

If we move the tank to that wall, we can cut out almost a "door" behind it, and have COMPLETE tank access from behind for once. Then go to Ikea and get a corner shelving unit, which will be for supplements and also for all my books. We'll pick out a new couch and maybe move the computer if necessary. The other thing we noticed is that the tank will get some direct sunlight if we keep the curtains open after we move it to the "new" spot. Thoughts?

There's one more idea we've been toying with. I want a way to have an auto top off system, directly from my RO/DI unit, which is completely possible. The catch is I dont want extra reservoir buckets and rubbermaid tubs hanging around in the den, it's got to be direct. I know how to do this, but the question is how to plumb it so it works in my house. My dad was going to just plumb it from the garage, but it gets too cold in there and I think the pipes will freeze. Then he had a very creative idea to use the houses AC and heating vents, and go up that way from the basement. I thought that was creative, but then I was worried about how the pipes would be affected in winter/summer. I dont know how the temperature of the water would be, and I dont know if thats just asking for ick. Any ideas?

I hope someone can follow what I'm saying.

Would it be possible to put the tank in the wall? This is what I did and it really opened up the room.

Wait, are you planning on any more tanks?

I'd conceder any kind of major remodeling centered around fishtanks a bit selfish. I mean your parents already tossed a couch to make room for one tank. That's a heck of alot more than what most of our parents would do for us. No offense, but that's your family room. I could see turning an unused basement or shed into a "fish" room. But, this room is very important to your family (or so I guess, but most people use family rooms alot).

I don't know. I'm, just throwing this out there. I know I got all excited and started planning for a 120 in my living room. Then, my mom decided she wanted less clutter and told me to forget the idea. So, I got a 20L which I really can't see becasue it's in the corner. But the point is, I was getting a bit too excited and out of hand and I needed to take a breath and relax. I really think you should too.

You're missing the point.

There will be no more fish tanks in this room.

The point of this thread is to figure out how to plumb the RO/DI unit, and if I should move the tank so that we can have more room in the room.

Nobody minds the fish tank, it's all the fish tank clutter that gets on everybodys nerves.

Additives and supplements can go in a cabinet, thats not a true issue.

The issue, is moving the tank, so we can have access to behind it...and the other issue is plumbing an RO/DI auto top off system.
