It's sand with benificial bacteria on it. Just like live rock.

Sand that has micro organisimes already in it.used to start a tank.hardly worth the $ since regular sand will be live after a short time!

Right place, right time.

As for is it worth it? No, I don't belive it is. Regular sand is far less, and after a short time, it will be alive. The play sand I used was bubbling nitrogen within a month.

Yup,I think several people on the board use regular play sand.I use aragonite sand though due to its buffering ability.

I used play sand in my tank, it's white, and argonite based, so why not save some money?

Heres what I used. Picture

That looks like the same kind I have, just a different looking bag. I have 400 pounds of it in my tanks with no problems.

You've mentioned using Southdown, so if thats the case it's the same sand. I simply purchased a more recent version of the package.

I still have 80 pounds left.

Make sure it's aragonite based, not silicate based.

Silicate based sand will cause algae problems down the road and is not suggested for saltwater use.

If you are unsure, pour a little vinegar on to it. If it bubbles, it is aragonite.

They removed teh word southdown on the new packaging. It's still the same. I like the fact it says not intended for aquarium use.

Yes, it's part of an agreement they have with CaribSea, the aquarium sand company that buys sand from the same source and sells it for actual aquarium use.

Around here you can only buy "beach sand" or play sand thats silicate based. When was the last decade that beach sand would be clean enough to use in an aqurium?
I had to pay the high LFS price to get aragonite!]
