Hi,
If this is a salt water tank as you mention, then you
HAVE to use one of the following:
Crushed Coral
Crushed Oyster Shells
Crushed Limestone

All are carbonates and will leach into the water giving
you a constant 8.2pH and saltwater hardness.

Regular sand, such as playsand, most beach sand, and
swimming pool sand is a silicate and is inert in the
water. If you use that, then you will constantly be
adjusting, and adding chemicals to maintain the waters
pH and hardness.

Hi
Actually, there are very few real plants that grow in
a saltwater tank. Most of what you see are not actually
plants but rather higher forms of algae. You can use
a crushed coral (granular) gravel, or they also market
a crushed coral sand. Either would work great for your
purposes.

Aragonite based Oolitic (sugar sized) sand would be the best IMO. With oolitic sand you wont have to do gravel vacs like you would with crushed coral.

You have base rock in your tank.
