FOWLR Fish only with Live Rock. All the same but with live rock, no corals. Reef. All the same as above, but with much more light, skimmer a must. A hang on back filter is optional. Other filters, not really worth the effort. This is a very basic list. Dan |

dthurs Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4340 Kudos: 4170 Votes: 529 Registered: 18-Feb-2003 | As I said, I need to know the type of tank? FO is easy and the least expensive. FOWLR is still easy, but live rock can be about $5 a pund, and you will need between 20 and 60 pounds of rock. Less rock is fine. Reef will take a lot more time, and money. The lights alone could cost a few hundered $$. Once we know the dirrection you want, we can give better advice. Dan |

dthurs Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4340 Kudos: 4170 Votes: 529 Registered: 18-Feb-2003 | Cycle the tank with live rock. As for fish, add them after the cycle. Clowns are good starter fish Dan |

FantomFish Hobbyist Posts: 120 Kudos: 183 Votes: 1 Registered: 30-Jan-2004 | Ok if the guy sold you live sand it isnt hurting anything. You spent a bit more than normal, and he made a little more than usual, but he is trying to help and it wont hurt starting off with live sand. It will help you get fish sooner. Ya the guy did kinda try and get you to buy extra, but what salesman doesn't? Hes trying to make a living. |

I used southdown play sand from a hardware store, 350 pounds of it. When you add the live rock, the bacteria and critters(worms, pods, etc.) migrate in to the sand makeing it live sand at a fraction of the cost. Another cost saving option is reef bones. I'm starting to finally see this at more and more LFS. This can replace 50% to 66% of your live rock. The only draw back is it will slow down the cycle a little, but well worth the cost savings. dthurs Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 4340 Kudos: 4170 Votes: 529 Registered: 18-Feb-2003 | Looks good so far. But sorry to say, live sand is something you could have gone without. Regular sand is far cheeper, and will get seeded from the live rock. I'm sure you will be very happy once you get going, just never be satisfied. Dan |

FantomFish Hobbyist Posts: 120 Kudos: 183 Votes: 1 Registered: 30-Jan-2004 | Ok, well you have started out very well. Get 2 powerheads of about 200 gph a peice. I would reccomend getting the best of EVERYTHING. This will save you money. If you get powerheads that are the best you will never think you dont have enough. I bought two powerheads that i will be upgrading because they are to weak. |
