the last 4 and the first one could stand a little better lighting, imho. what format are you converting from? ??? -> jpg format?

Jpg to jpg, actually. When I take them off the camera, they're huuuuge jpgs. When I resize them, they get blurry - but when I resize them and save them as bitmaps, they stay sharp.

I thought 2 and 3 were a little to bright - no?

Are you using photoshop/paint/etc?

I usually get good results from photoshop. Also, personally, I really like the first shot. It's crystal clear and has a nice angle to it.

Paint - but I tried "Jasc Photoshop" which came with the computer and got similar results. Sigh. At least I know now that the bitmaps are better, I can use them on my site even if I can't post them most places, etc.

Ah. MS Paint is a poor program for photo editing. If you really wanted photoshop, you could IM me for photoshop CS 8. Adobe is, IMO, the only photoshop program worth using.

Photoshop while arguable the best is also expensive . There are many other programs out there that do what most people use photoshop for. One that Whetu introduced me to is [link=Irfanview]http://www.irfanview.com/" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link]. It's freeware (so nothings stolen ) and will crop rotate ect ect ect that are the most common uses for photoshop among the majority of the population.

The very nature of a jpg is that it reduces resolution. Reduced resolution will equal reduced file size, it also means the picture is less sharp.

Wish someone had told me about jpgs ... until now it was just "well, that's what you save things as." Bitmaps are, well, stupid paint files. Had no idea they might be better!

I'll check out that program, thanks, Babel. I think my pictures aren't good enough to be worth theft over!

Little M,
depending how your camera saves files, you might not really have much of a choice in the format....in which case....look the picture over carefully, decide what changes need to be made, what needs to be added ect ect ect.

It will also help if when you're shooting you go on the higher quality (if you have that option), but not necessarily the largest size.

Example:

My cannon has 3 different sizes of pics it can take ...small fits on this page quite nicely without needing any reducition or forcing people to scroll sideways...the medium and large will create extra work as well as be larger in file size.
Each size pic has standard fine and super fine resolution...which not only increases quality but will also increase file size, but not the dimensions.

Now ....how many were going to St. Ives? .

I'm using the highest resolution setting (although I admit that's only 3.1 megapixels), but there's no size adjustment to be made.
I think they are coming out pretty sharp, though, as long as I save them as bitmaps - here's picture 1 as a bitmap. Is sharpness the main issue?


I admit I have "kennel blindness" about my own photos - and if I don't know where the flaws are, I can't improve. So, I'm sucking it up - y'all can be harsh!

IMO they're pretty good pics....I think what you might be noticing isnt' so much blurriness as lack of contrast...the black isn't quite as black, the brown loses some depth that type of thing....

Jpg's are the file to use, they don't actually reduce the resolution unless you tell it to, what they do do is give fantastic compression. They reduce the file size dramatically. Bitmaps generally have a much larger file size and as you know arent as commonly used. what babelfish said about using the diff sizes on your camera with the best setting is the best thing to do. I would try getting hold of some free software, or having a sly word with someone who has photoshop the ful version is out of most ppls range money wise, altho they do do a... ummm photoshop elements i think which you get free if you buy a scanner or something, ive probably got a disk of it lying around. Didn't you get any software with your camera? oh and 3millilon pixels is fine for the web, if dpi (dots per inch) or resolution means anything to you then, your screen can only show 72dpi so it doesnt matter if you've got a 10million pixel camera it wont look any better than if you took it on a 3 million one... it would just be massive!!!

I dnt think they are bad shots either. the darker ones are lacking contrast thats all, i did read a good article giving slightly more technical advice on how to use a camera, it could have been on this site actually... *goes away to explore* nope it wasnt this site, but here's the link anyway
