How big do they get? I was thinking of one for my 55 that I can set up again soon. Anyway, very nice pictures. That is a georgous Blue Ram Last edited by Tetra Fan at 19-Sep-2005 05:15 |

~jamie~ Big Fish Posts: 463 Kudos: 671 Votes: 65 Registered: 08-May-2004 | Cupa.. Actually we have been through this debate now for over a month (I too thought they were L333 even though we bought L236). The two are often confused with eachother due to their high simularities. The biggest difference that distinguish the L236's that we have and the L333's are the top dorsal fin and shape of the head. The L333's have a shorter blunter/rounder head (kinda like an L260 Queen) and the L236's head is longer and the top dorsal is not as tall/big. I am surely open for debate because I, like you, thought immediately that they were L333. The folks on planet catfish said you cannot go merely by markings but shape of the fish and whatnot. I guess if/when they do or don't get over 8cm we'll know for sure. Please feel free to provide further input if you have any. Thanks. P.S.... Check out this link of L333 at planetcatfish.com..... http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/hypancis/1024_1.php and here are two more pics of what I got... http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/xyshannen/L236.jpg and.... http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y120/xyshannen/L236one.jpg Let me know what you think. Cup_of_Lifenoodles Fish Guru Posts: 2755 Kudos: 1957 Votes: 30 Registered: 09-Sep-2004 | L-333 actually has a less compact head structure than most like-species, including both L-236 and 66, as the distance from the tip of the snout to the eyes is quite great. Dorsal size is quite variable even amongst individuals of the same species, and relative size to the fish often differs with age. The said head shape and markings are both very indicative whence comparing the two species in question, as L-236 have very distinct markings that are difficult to mistaken for anything else, save perhaps the notorious h. "belo monte", which seems to have distinguishing traits of many hypancistrus. Of the three 333 that I currently own, all Xingu caught, as I've been assured, all look identical to yours. The fact of the matter is, however, that you have healthy and beautiful fish that many would pay top dollar for (especially those gu obos; a species I have always dreamt of owning). The BEST manner, by far, in which one can ID without question the given hypancistrus is by finding the locality from which they were caught. |

I've contacted the guy whom we bought them from, he says he got them from Germany and are not found in the wild.... So... I don't know what that means but I was able to get a decent shot of the third "catfish in question" this evening and thought I would share... [/font] |

However, they are commonly misidentified as 333. http://photobucket.com/albums/v398/Kleevage/?action=view&current=ooo013.jpg The camera was angled in such a way that the fish appears more elongated than it actually is, and the flash disrupts much of it's coloration (therefore, it looks something like L-66, which I assure you it is not). In reality, the fish is much darker, and is, scale for scale, identical in appearance to your fish. |
