Just one of my crazy scarlet hermit crabs.. Guess he wanted to make sure I could tell him apart from all of his buddies.. Needless to say, his name is Hairy..

Nice Hydroids Hes a walking hotel! Very Nice picture and a nice scarlet too.

I hope the hydroids dont start spreading and stay on his shell. They are a pain to get rid of once they start growing on rock, and spread nearly as fast as aiptasia....aiptasia on steroids that is. Just watch for them popping up in other areas of the tank cause they can sting/kill corals.

yup.. I keep trying to coax him into a different shell, but he's quite happy with what he's got unfortunately.. At least my blue legs are looking stylish in their assorted shell finery..

LOL, I think he's adorable like that too, RB.. He's always in the back of the tank, so it took me a while to finally get a good look at what was growing on him.. All I could tell was that he definately had some hitchhikers along for the ride..

I'm going to send the picture in to folks that are smarter than me to find out if these "tag-alongs" are the bad kind or the ones that aren't that big of a deal.. If they're not that big of a problem, I'll let him keep his house party.. Otherwise he's going to require a good scrubbing, because so far he hasn't been willing to ditch his shell..

Oleta, that hermit crab looks a bit like me ...

Me Beside My Aquarium

I think the comparison is apposite, don't you???

And yes, I'd watch those hydroids. Complete pain to remove if they attain pest status.

All I can say is that if I hadn't gotten so comfortable calling him "Hairy" his new name would be Calilasseia..

If you get a second one like it Oleta, you know what to call it ...

For general amusement, you could put the two pics together in a thread in RR called "Separated At Birth ... ?"

Incidentally, what species of hermit is this? My invertebrate database is woefully small in this regard.

This little guy is Paguristes cadenati, and commonly called the Scarlet Hermit crab.. They are small (max size is around 1.5" ) and peaceful omnivores.. Good for tank clean up since they'll scavange leftover foods and some algaes.. Easy to care for and trustworthy tank occupants since they're very good natured when it comes to hermit crabs..

*considers posting thread about how people can look like sea critters in rec room*
