This is Jacques (yeah, I know, but he did so many small things just like the animation that it just kind of happened, I don't normally name critters after movie characters!)

He's a cherabin, or giant river shrimp (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) that moved in last week.

'scuse the decor

Hope you got a big tank handy, Calla. My M. rosenbergii is at about 10 inches now and shows no sign of stopping. Not to mention he has the appetite of a horse.

All in all, they're a good invert with a lot of personality (mine will tap on the front glass when he's hungry or bored), but they get BIG.

Enjoy your acquisition!

Yup, 2 large tanks available depending on how big he gets and his preferred mode of movement, so far it is looking like he'll want the one with more turning space rather than swimming space He's still only about 12cm, so I have a bit of time up my sleeve, but I'm betting at this stage he'll be moulting pretty frequently and he'll grow faster than I expect!

Great shots Calla, especially that second one. He looks like he's really full of himself.

Nah, you don't have to say he's cute I'm not even sure I think he's cute, but he sure is interesting. I love the way he motors around his tank, completely surreal! I'm used to shelled things shooting backwards at speed, not taking a leisurely forward-facing trip around the place.

Huge is certainly on the cards, but right now I'm settling for alive and well and getting through his next moult. I love having creatures I've never had before, but geez it is nerve-wracking. At least there is some info around on these guys. Not much, but some

no tank mates yet, and only sacrificial ones when I do.

He's in a 14 gal atm (tons of space at his current size), but will be stepped up with everyone else dependant on growth rates. There are two larger tanks for him to choose from once he moults.

He came through Sin, last I heard they have a handful left. I *think* they might come through Aquagreen originally (if not, they definitely stock them) and they mail order retail

Hi Callatya,

Fantastic pics, and a great looking cherabin.

Looks like Aquagreen currently have a different species listed in their catalogue to the one you have (M. bullatum is what is listed), but it wouldn't suprise me if they occasionally stock the M. rosenbergii as well as it looks like their range has been expanding recently with more plant and fish species as well as inverts.

It's good to see some locals getting into breeding and retailing inverts, particularly natives. We may see some more of them in the stores in the near future.

Have fun with Jacques.

Here is his old skin. It frightened me a bit as I've never had luck with macrobrachium species and the colour that this looked from a distance is the colour of a dead one, but once I got up close, WHEEE!!

And in his new shell Note the colour of the nippers, very pink! They are back to being blue now, it took about 24 hours for them to change back.

He's eaten the soft bits of his old shell and is looking pretty good. I'm dying to get in there and clean out the fuzzy pellets (he didn't eat the day before, but he did ferret the pellets away) but I'll wait til he hardens up a bit.

I'm not sure how often the moult, probably close to every 6-8 months at his size, maybe more. He's only moulted once since I've had him here.

I'm pretty sure it is one male per tank, but you might be able to have a pair. You'd need a very big tank though, these guys get big!

My guy was still molting about once every 6 weeks, and he was a respectable 10 inches.

He died about 2 weeks ago. He literally lifted the lid on his tank and climbed out. I found him the next morning in the corner of the room, but I couldn't save him.

really? geez, I better get this fellow going! Given the lifespan and estimated size, I'd thought it would have had to be closer to every 8 weeks, but he just doesn't seem to be growing that quickly. That being said, I've only had him on good food for a short period, so maybe this length of time is a result of not being fed well while at the wholesaler.

I'm sorry to hear about your guy
