Will be interesting to see how they color up
Theresa,

You asked for it

Here is a picture of the couple that I took, hm, maybe a week ago. I would have never expected that the female will turn into such a beauty

You have good taste in fish. I had some praecox rainbows a few years ago and they were nippy with my angels and I think gouramis. Have you noticed any nipping? Those Apistogramma viejita II caught my attention(after the twinbar platies). Which do you like better, the rainbows or Apistogramma viejita II? Nice work on the pics btw.

Thanks for the input to all

Jubilee -

About the Rainbows and Pearls: believe it or not, they really like to hang out together. Not that they form a school or such, but they seem to be buddies

Asking me which one I like better is not fair , somebody may tell my fish and then I would be in trouble. But my observation is that I like my latest purchase the best. After a few months, I begin to look back at the others and fall in love with them all over again. What can I say, I love them all. Ok, maybe except my platies, not as individuals but as a gang of rabbits. My 29G is becoming way overpopulated (found another 8 thriving fry last week).

Sure. Here's some info http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Minnows,%20Killies,%20Golden%20Wonder.htm

The pictures really don't show the beauty of the gold variety very well. They are quite peaceful and have big mouths. I had a pair years ago and want to get another pair. They are "predatory" with big mouths and will eat any tiny fish that can fit in its mouth. You can even feed them a whole shrimp pellet and they will eat it up. I have seen them at Petco lately, and I've seen them at Petsmart once before. They are one of my favorites.

Here's a pic of mine http://pictures.aol.com/ap/myAlbums.do?albumId=25760.373.1045342311442.1

Thanks Jubilee for the info on these fish

I bought 3 more rainbows this weekend, to size up my school from 5 to 8. But first the new arrivals will have to spend some time in the QT, here they are about 5 min after coming out of the bag (picture is also in my 125G log, top of page 84) :

Oooohhh,

Thanks everyone, that is so nice of you

I think it is not me who has the gift, it is the camera that was a gift (to myself, I may say). It was rather clear to me that once I got the big tank I will need a great camera (ok, not super, but still a Canon Digital Rebel XT) and a good macro lense to capture the life aquatic.

And compared to the overall cost of the tank and such, the camera is rather cheap .

Thanks again, I will try to have more nice photos in the future,

Ingo

Ok,

Got some new pictures to share. I went out to buy some kitty litter yesterday and ended up with a pair of small German Rams . Usually, buying fish without longer consideration is not my thing, in particular when purchasing them in a chain store. But the price was good, it definately was a pair (except if the store clerk packed the wrong female), and there was some space left in my QT.

Here is a shot of the male (sorry about algae on side panel of QT, didn't think I will have to show off new fishies):

Here is the female. She was all gray in the bag and is just starting to recover. I hope that I will have more luck with them than I had with my last set of German Rams. You can also see these and more pictures of them in my 125G log on page 86.

Well,

after having discussions in other threads about the gender of these two Rams, and after describing their behavior, I don't have them any longer, they died on me yesterday .

So when you look at the Ram pictures now, say a blessing for them so they feel happy in fish-heaven.

LF, that is terrible. And the male had colored up so good! Sometimes you just can't do anything to keep those guys alive. No matter how long you acclimate them or do what you can, it doesn't help. I'm lucky I guess that my female has been great since I've had her. I did buy another, I think a male, a couple months ago and it lived for a day.

Sorry about your losses!

Yeah, maybe some day I will try Rams again, but not soon.

Instead I will delight myself on my existing stock, for example these two (of 8) Dwarf Neon Rainbows:

Sorry to hear about your rams, I never had much luck with them either

I just look at the latest pics in your other thread. The full tank shots are gorgeous How are your apistos doing, any breeding behavior?

Theresa,

Thanks. I can't tell if there is any breeding behavior in the Apistos, but I doubt it. The male is often perusing the front bottom section of the tank for "invisible" food. The female is most of the time somehwere hidden in the bushes. What she is doing there is beyond me, maybe she is trying to raise some fry. On the other hand, she is out during feeding for about an hour straight (and otherwise whenever I approach the tank) and I doubt that any fry could survive with about 100 fish in the tank.

Thanks for asking,

Ingo

Interesting comment, I've noticed mine doing that as well.

Very nice shot of the male. I think mine being essentially the only fish in a relatively large tank is intimidating so I haven't gotten any good pictures yet.

The whole ram situation is a bit problematic at the moment. Singapore is one of the major importers of captive bred blue rams to the US and the UK at the moment, and the stock is stressed from the huge shipping time, and the limited genepool they are bred from. They also seem completely unused to the protozoa that ritually infest tanks that have been stocked with south american fish, in short they have lost a lot of their natural immunity. The females seem especially susceptible.

I have found pre-emptive treatment with metronidazole invaluable for maintaining these singapore german rams, also they have to be purchased almost immediately on arrival in lfs's , so they can be treated immediately before the protozoan infections become too advanced. With help, they survive the initial infection, reacquire their immunity quickly, and do well. Like so...

Thanks all for the comments

It has been a while since I added a new fish species to my collection, but it finally happened again. I have traded in about 30 of my Espei at the LFS (that brings the total of Espei traded to 60, not to bad given that I only purchased 12 to get the group started) and used the store credit (plus some cash) to buy me a pair of Apistogramma cacatuoides "Triple-Red".

I also posted 2 shots in Theresa's Apisto Photo Thread, so here are two different shots. Both are taken one day after adding them to the QT.

Here is the male

As I decsribed in other threads already, I lost the male Triple-Red 3 days after arrival. It wasn't my fault, even the LFS main guy acknowledged that he was not in good shape when I got him, but he thought I might be able to save him (but didn't tell me that when I got him, instead I found out when I called back because he died).

Anyway, they replaced him for me with another male, but because they did not have any Triple-Reds I fell in love with a pair of Double-Orange (aka Orange Flash, I believe). And, on top of it, I could not part with my surviving female, I like her too much.

But don't worry, they are closely related, to the point where Double-Orange have Triple-Red fry anyway.

Here is the female:
