Nice rockwork, bad substrate. Some background plants would be nice.

Well usually a LFS will hold a variety of rocks. I think any rock will work in a fish tank, just some might affect the ph so you might want to consider that. I just found all my rocks in my backyard, i scrubbed them with some hot water and stuff, and put them in.

I like it........but if it was my tank I would extend the rockwork all the way across the tank. But I'm not a cichlid keeper, so what do I know.

Best rock for a Rift Lake tank if you can get it (usually costs a bit at the stores but it's worth it) is Tufa rock. Usually sold for saltwater tanks, it's calcareous (limestone based) so it'll buffer the pH and hardness of your water in addition to providing the fishes with the scenery they want. Plus, it's a soft rock, so you can shape it and dig caves into it without needing specialist tools - a carefully wielded flat blade screwdriver is usually sufficient for modelling purposes.

It'll be a sort of bleached white when you first get it, but it'll soon acquire a nice natural looking algal coating that will also benefit your Mbunas as they'll be able to graze on it.
