catdancer Big Fish Mad Scientist Posts: 471 Kudos: 138 Votes: 13 Registered: 15-Apr-2007 | The most reliable gender difference is pink coloration of the belly, the dorsal fin is not in my experience. If the fish shows any sign of pinkish coloration in the stomach area it's a female. Also, the male ram's forehead is steeper than the female's, it is not quite a hump as in other cichlid species but you get the idea. Here is a pic of my most recent breeding pair, soprry for the blurriness but you can appreciate the forehead difference (I realized that this is a brightly colored male with red coloration as well but the female's pink spot is more tailwards). hope this helps |
