New Camera? Suggestions wanted. | |
littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | Direct competitor of Kodak. Buying a Fuji is more or less directly equivalent to wanting my local economy to shut down. Thanks, Babel, that helped a lot. I'm running off to read your articles now! -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | Yeah, the camera my sister's lending me has an "11 cm" macro, and my current one is 10, which is why I think it might not be right for me. The Nikon is 4. (As far as I can tell from that site, smaller is better!) Never really thought my pictures were bad, though, wish someone'd told me earlier! -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

Optical is actual zoom, digital is just the camera acting as a photo editor and blowing up the image (more often than not rather poorly too ). If a camera says 10X find out if thats 10X digital, optical or a combanation of the two. There are some 10X optical zooms out there, and there are some that just want to be. When it comes to fish though, macro focus will be much much more important than zoom. ^_^ |

Babelfish recommended to me the Cannon Powershot A70. It's only 2 MP, but 3x Optical Zoom.. For $300. Canadian I couldn't go wrong. The pics it takes is good enough for me, and I've been lucky to have some remarks made by people who liked some of my shots. Click on my www for an idea... Those pics were all taken without even tapping into any of the features of the camera, and haven't broken my tripod out yet even. They're point and shoot shots. I know you're going to buy Kodak, just make sure it has optical zoom and macrofocus The Amazon Nut... |

littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | Realistically, the time has come to pass my camera down to my little sister and get myself a new one. Requirement: Digital, excellent macro feature, big with the megapixels, holds a little ScanDisk (not the ones that are like 1.5" by 1.5", this is more like 1" by .6" since I already have several, and any other features y'all deem necessary for shooting fish (I figure any camera that can shoot fish will also be able to take snapshots, so I don't have to specify that!) Big bonus if it's Kodak, since I live in Rochester (Kodak's hometown - our economy depends a bit too heavily on them, Xerox, and Bausch & Lomb). Definitely cannot be Fuji. Nikon okay (not really a competitor per se, and they do make great cameras ... although I'm not sure they're big in digital). Well, suggest away! -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

Babelfish Administrator Small Fry with Ketchup Posts: 6833 Kudos: 8324 Votes: 1570 Registered: 17-Apr-2003 | Nikon and canon are both great...you run into problems when you try to compair cameras that were released two years apart. You wouldnt' compair a two year old computer with one released today, don't do it with a camera ...plus it's likely that you wont find one for sale, except used. What to look for when getting a camera to shoot fish with...I had written an article a while back 700 words on purchasing a digital camera which keeps in mind what's important when shooting fish. Of those two cameras that you posted about the canon and the nikon, the nikon has the closer macro, is cheaper and has a higher MP. From the research I've done and the experiences I've had a 2mp camera shoot good pics...more mp's are good, but not all that necessary, especially if money is a concern. White balance allows the camera to match the color of the lights. Makes for a more accurate portrayal of color Macro focus allows the camera to focus on close ob Film speed lets it shoot fast enough to catch faster fish movement in the lower light conditions of many tanks. You'll see numbers such as 50, 64, 100, 200, 400 and sometimes 800. Bigger the number the faster the camera. However faster film speeds tends to increase ammount of "noise" in the pics. See what's in you're area, just like fish...do the research...http://www.dpreview.com is IMO one of the best review sites, they've expanded their staff lately, while it is a bit more technical on the photo side than most people are able to understand...I'm just a PM away ... if my box isn't full . ^_^ |

littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | Thanks. Anyone have an opinion on the Canon Powershot S45? I realize the chance of someone owning on who's on the site is quite low, but maybe someone who knows more about cameras than I checked up on it at some point. My sister has one she rarely uses and is going to let me "test-drive." Personally on that DPreview site the one that looked quite good was the Nikon Coolpix 5200, but I still don't know enough about cameras to know if it's actually a good camera or I'm just missing something! -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | :hrug:: Yes, but I feel comfortable here, we have a forum dedicated to photos and photo questions, people here are much more likely to know about fish-specific aids and good fish cameras, and frankly I'd just rather ask here if the option's available. -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |

littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | Only problem with using a review website: I don't know enough to know what I'm looking for! (And again, where's a blushing smiley when I need one?) Ummm ... for example, the one I'm looking at has "White Balance," which Babel suggested, but I don't know what that means. Help? -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |
