My old Kodak digi was pretty bad with fish photos, but my Canon has no trouble at all

Excellent pic

What kind of camera? And just one comment - next time aim to focus on the fish's eyes, looks like you got him juuuust behind the head, enough to make his face a little blurry. Really nice shot though

Canons are really good for fish pics, they seem to be good on specific depths of field (ie good at ignoring glass distortion), and the tungsten light setting seems to work well with the lights, especially if you set them to av mode and use the macro,or tv mode if the tank is nice and bright. I have a canon IS S2 and an old a400 and they both take pretty good fish pictures.

If your new camera allows you to set aperture and shutter speed manually, then you can get around the critical focus problem.

Set your aperture to the narrowest setting (higher numbers equals narrower aperture, so for example, f2.8 is the widest setting on my camera, while f22 is the narrowest), then set your shutter speed to sync with your flash (most modern digitals allow 1/125 second or faster shutter speed syncing with flash - mine will even allow 1/1000 second syncing if there is enough light!) and shoot your fishes that way. The narrower the aperture, the greater the depth of field, and the more margin you have for getting the fish critically focused. Also, try to focus manually instead of relying on autofocus if you can, because then you don't suffer the delay while the camera refocuses before taking the shot, and instead shoots instantly the moment you fire the shutter. I've discovered that it's almost a necessity to disengage autofocus with digital cameras when shooting fish in an aquarium, because you line up on the fishes doing something interesting, and fire the shutter, then the camera whirrs while it refocuses and you lose the moment.

Mind you, this is easier said than done with some fishes - try 9mm long Panda Cory fry against gravel with which they blend superbly!

Im getting pics that are completely white or black

Shutter speed goes up to 1/2000 (Dont know how to get it to sync with flash...must check manual)

Aperture is at 8 (most narrow)

ISO speed goes up to 400.

Katie I think your canon will have both 1 st and second phase flash settings, try swopping them over, you might be missing the flash when the piccie takes on a manual setting. Personally I dont use flash when taking pics of fish, you lose the atmos, and it really hacks them off (photoshock can be an issue).

Heres one I took on av setting (light priority) , whitebalance tungsten, iso 200, supermacro with a canon S2 IS .

and just showing off this is a 1mm long aphid.
