New Shellie Tank - UPDATED BREEDING PIC | |
Sin in Style Mega Fish Posts: 1323 Kudos: 1119 Votes: 165 Registered: 03-Dec-2003 | i love the simplicity of shellie tanks. so easy to setup and not so bareing on the eyes to take everything in. i'm in the process of setting up a 30g breeder shellie tank myself. its going to have the same look as this one but with all black sand and greay jagged rocks in a corner. same look and idea with a bit more contrast. great looking tank and good luck with the breeding. keep us updated im very interested in hearing about the up and coming fry |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | Thanks. It's a 10 gallon tank with an AC 150 on it. The way the tank is set up (check out the pic at the top of this thread) the outflow of the filter is broken up by the rockwork on the left side. The fry hang out right at the edge of that reddish rock and seem to like jumping up into the little bit of current every now and then. They're too far away to get sucked up though. This is my first time raising fry, so we'll see what happens |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | Well, as the new title of this thread suggests, my brevis have bred I'm not sure when, but looking back on it i think this is what happened: 2 weeks ago I did a 3 day blackout to get rid of some BGA. After i took the towel off the tank I left the lights off for a few more days, so things were very calm in the tank. Last week I noticed the male and female spending an awful lot of time over in the one corner of the tank, away from their usual shells. Then, just this morning as I was going to feed them, I noticed these little blurs swimming about around the ba NowherMan6 attached this image: Last edited by NowherMan6 at 29-Jul-2005 08:29[/font] Last edited by NowherMan6 at 29-Jul-2005 08:29 |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | hey Sin, it's funny, becuase i originally wanted to use just tahitian moon sand. In the end, though, I used eco-complete cichlid sand, which is a mix of TMS and aragonite I think. I just figured it be easier to not have to worry about buffering etc., let the substrate do it. It's pretty fine, the fish can dig like crazy in it, and since brevis are naturally light colored, the moon sand helps show them off nicely. Post pics of yours when it's done! |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | So, I started my brevis tank a few weeks ago but I've been taking my time in getting some pics. Thought I'd share: This is the tank when first set up, without shells... NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | Thanks Stormy When I was first deciding on how to set up the new tank I thought I would just go with something very simple, non-planted etc. But once you go planted, you never go back But still, it doens't get much easier than anubias wedged in between rocks. I'll see how it goes with breeding - I've been feeding them a few times a day all this week, and I'll be away this weekend, so they'll have some privacy. We'll see what happens. |

NowherMan6 Fish Master Posts: 1880 Kudos: 922 Votes: 69 Registered: 21-Jun-2004 | Thanks LM. I'll give that a try. I have no trouble feeding the female - she's started to beg - but the male is a different story. He's still very shy, and I usually only see him eat after I drop a few pellets/ brine shrimp in the tank and then walk away. As long as he's eating I guess... |

littlemousling Conchiform Posts: 5230 Registered: 23-Aug-2003 | Feed often, too. And give them a little privacy - if they're shacked up together, placing a piece of paper on the glass between, well, you and them can help them feel secure enough to spawn successfully. -Molly Visit shelldwellers.com! |
