New shrimp and gourami fry | |
Gone_Troppo Enthusiast Posts: 285 Kudos: 196 Registered: 13-Mar-2007 | Just thought I'd share a few pics of out latest additions; ninja shrimp and croaking gourami fry. We got the shrimp two weeks ago and within 2 days of having them in the tank two of the shrimp were carrying eggs 1. shrimp tank 2. female with eggs 3. smaller shrimp The gourami fry appeared without too much warning in our 180 gallon community tank yesterday afternoon. By the time we noticed that the parents had made a little bubble nest under some floating leaves and were acting all territorial, the fry were already free swimming (although still hanging in the nest from time to time). The father is doing a fantastic impression of a much bigger fish, chasing off anything that gets too close, including the much larger angel fish and platinum gourami. We have moved about 30 of the fry to a spearate tank to see if we can successfully raise a few. Those that are left in the big tank are likely to become a tasty treat for the rest of the fish as soon as the fry get a bit bigger and start to venture away from the nest. 4. nest 5. dad with nest 6. fry_1 7. fry_2 8. fry_3 9. fry in bubble nest - pic added 22 may Edit - 22 May: The shrimp eggs have hatched!! ... 14 days after we first noticed the eggs Picture linked below shows the tiny white specks of baby shrimp sitting on the filter. (For a size reference the filter is about 1 x 1.5 inches.) 10. baby shrimp BTW... how do you refer to baby shrimp? fish have fry, cats have kittens, dogs have puppies, swans have signets, shrimp have ??? G_T Never be afraid to try something new. Remember that a lone amateur built the Ark. A large group of professionals built the Titanic. |
