It's a pretty darn simple setup - fine white marine sand, escargot shells (about a dozen, spread out), a couple of rocks and a couple of silk plants to help them create territorial boundaries (the silk plants are placeholders until I put more rock in - not a lot, but enough to break up the line of site a bit). Two 50 watt heaters, a smallish Whisper filter, weekly water changes - that's pretty much it.

I should mention - it may not be readily apparent from the photos, but these fish are only half grown at about 1" long. I can't wait to see them at 2"!

Wow LM! Those things are spectacular! Are they in a 20 long as of right now? Would you mind giving us some tank specs so others can produce(or at least hope to produce) as wonderful specimens as yours?

Er - wow. Thanks. I'm going to be blushing for days (and, I suspect, photographing these poor flash-blinded fish).

Wow. Stunning.

Are you sure you're not a secret love child of Jacques Cousteau???

Those photos are, again, magnificent. That picture of the pair alongside each other would shame many professionals whose work adorns textbooks. That pic belongs in a textbook on shell dwellers.

You can show that pic off and justifiably say "this is how it should be done". Basically, any pros who can't match this shouldn't bother. I've seen lots of fish pics in my time, some God-awful ones and some truly magnificent ones, and this is up there with the likes of Hans-Joachim Richter. Ten out of ten and a dozen merit stars for superlative work, and the fish are a huge credit to you too, because if you didn't look after them well, they wouldn't look that good regardless of how well you photographed them. They look stunning, and over here in the UK that pair would probably sweep the board of prizes at a fish show. And having spent time under the wing of a guy who had a room literally full of trophies, and a storming collection of fish (including a nearly full sized Acanthicus adonis Plec), I think I'm qualified to say so

Here's the female, for good measure. She's a biiig fan of puffing out her gills when she's displaying, which I find quite cute but makes her look odd in photos.

And the pair:

I always thought when people talked about shell dwellers that they were talking about snails and clams and other like creatures.

I already have a meleagris/stappersi profile up, actually.

Shutter speed was 160 (luckily I don't have shaky hands; it's not a well-lit tank so I comensate with somewhat lower shutter speeds than are commonly used), F11, stupid attached flash (a flash is, at this point, higher on the want list than a macro lens).

Thanks, I really appreciate it!

LittleMousling, they are STUNNING photographs of your Shell Dweller ... SUPERB quality!!!!

And, that fish is definitely extra apecial ... I can see why you're proud of him! Put up a profile so you can add your pics to the profile and immortalise him forever!

[EDIT again!!!}

You should stick those in the thread on how to take photos .. that is how a fish photo should look, regardless of which species ... pin sharp focus, superb colour rendition, shows the species beautifully, a real "stop me and buy one" photo set that ... Oh, and what aperture/shutter settings did you use?

I recommend a 20 for the species - a 10 can work, but I for one wouldn't want to wtch it. I have a few others at home but this guy is in a 20 long with a reverse trio.

Thanks for all the comments!

I have a million nice shots of this male but this one really stood out ... isn't he a love?

EDIT: This one too, actually.

Hmmm ... there are a LOT of CA cichlids breeders, and good ones. Neptune Aquatics has meleagris, and they're in - I think San Jose? HotCichlids is near LA, they're great. I've ordered from one other CA breeder but frankly wouldn't recommend that one. Plus, try the Trading forum at shelldwellers.com, and then perhaps the one at Cichlid-forum.
Basically, you're in a great place for availability - if you want them, I'm sure you can get them.

Have you any connections in San Diego? I'm not usually too fond of the whole aquabid transaction thing.

No point getting one - you'd want a harem or at least a pair!

Freakin beautiful.

I've never been partial to african cichlids--but wow . Where I live, I see very little tang/vict action--most stores are stacked to the brim of their tanks with mbunas, though. I'd love to get my hands on one of these cuties. ;D
