I was inclined towards the Fuji. Also, the Olympus has a macro range of 2 cm whereas the Fuji has a 10 cm macro range. The Fuji came with a free wide angle lens.

Nope - I think she has it backwards.
i checked all the stats on Olympus cameras, and couldnt even find a model available here that had macro at all, and the best one I could find online in the states, had a macro of 8 inches!
My fuji can take awesome pics as close at a little closer than 2 inches away, which is probably close enough!
Congrats on your buy Clowny!
Hope the camera works well for you!!

Agreed, go with the olympus. Bigger, clearer LCD. MUCH better macro range (2cm?? are you kidding? that's fantastic!) Shorter zoom, but who cares? Zoom with your feet. Plus it has a higher pixel count (and though the CCD is smaller, it's not much smaller so the ability of the pixels to capture detail is probably roughly the same) so you can crop better, effectively zooming in on whatever subject. I think the choice is clear, based on that comparison.

canon nikon or olympus. Forget about digital zoom, pay attention to film speed and most importantly macro focus.

Checkout this link:
www.characin.com/photography

Randy's an exter and this is what he has to say:

I have found two features to be essential for taking aquarium photos:

1. Use of an external flash
2. The ability to set the aperture to at least 8.0f (and preferably to 11 or a higher number)

The following features, though not essential, are very desirable:

1. At least 2 megapixels (such as a resolution of 1600 x 1200 or larger)
2. Auto focus
3. Spot focus
4. TTL ("Through The Lens" light metering)
5. Zoom of at least 2x, preferably more
6. Ability to add on an auxiliary lens

Hey Guys

I have finally won an auction on a Fuji s5600 with 10x optical zoom, good ISO, 1 cm macro and the other good stuff. Hopefully, the person who put the camera on auction will deliver it to me safe and sound. Will provide you with more updates ASAP.

The camera cost me Rs. 15700 (additional 100 for COD). To convert to USD divide by 43.

Clowny.

just based on the stats alone, i would go with the olympus, especially if you're planning on taking lots of pics of your fish the olympus has a better closeup range compared to the fuji, more pixels, and a few other features you may or may not ever use, like continuous drive. the only thing i don't see in the comparison is the optical zoom, but i assume they have about the same optical zoom. if you plan on taking lots of closeups i would go with the olympus, but if you just want a camera that works, either would be fine. if you can get to a store and try them out before you make your final decision that would be the best way to do it.

Hi Clowny
Heres the stats that I can gather:
Olympus - 5mp
Fuji - 4mp
Olympus - 3x optical zoom
Fuji - 6x optical zoom
Olympus - no mention of macro feature on their site
Fuji - extremly good quality macro
Olympus - no ability to add wide angle or telephoto lens
Fuji - can add wide angle or telephoto lens upgrades

Personally, I would go for the Fuji. I looked at Olympus cameras when I was selecting mine, and noticed they are overpriced and give you very little features. The fuji has more features, and is upgradeable with better lenses.
Also, if you are going to buy a XD picture card for the Fuji, go for at least a 256mb card- then you can take 360 pictures at highest quality. The 16mb card they come with only allows 32 pics are highest quality.
Their cards are more expensive, but save better quality images and have less change of wiping out their own memory.
Thats why you pay more for them.

just to let you know, you should try for the most memory you can get for either camera. 16mb is not nearly enough room for pics, especially if you are taking raw pics at highest resolution

Okay, I went, I saw and I chose....

Almost...

I have settled on two cameras, the Fuji finepix 3500 which is a replacement of the S3000 and a Olympus C500. The Olympus C500 comes with a free tripod, 64 mb memory, a cover and is 3000 bucks more than the Fuji. If I had to buy the Fuji, and buy these accessories separately, they would both cost the same.

The Fuji comes with 16 mb ram, neck strap, wide lens cover.

Both cameras come with the USB cable, software, and a video cable.

I had the guy selling the Fuji take a picture of a very jittery tiger shark, and the pic looked really good. Could you guys if you understand features, look these cameras up and vote for one for me please?

Thanks
Clowny

I use a Nikon Coolpix 8800 and am THRILLED with it! It takes incredible pics! I will have to dig some up from my recent cruise and post them. I have only had it 2 ½ months now and have already taken THOUSANDS of pictures with it! Before it I had a Nikon Coolpix 3200, I LOVED it, just wanted an upgrade!

Canon EOS 20D. 50mm 1.8, sigma 12-24, canon 75-300 and canon 200 2.8L

Especially the 200 2.8

Ohhh mama... there should be a smiley face that's salivating for these occasions...

I wish I could justify the cost of a DSLR to myself, but Minolta just isn't offering that much right now...

First question: Theresa, what are those fry?

Next up, my cameras.

[1] Olympus OM30 manual 35mm film SLR, with T20 flashgun, set of 3 extension tubes (12mm, 20mm and 36mm), Sigma f3.5 70-210mm zoom lens (my standard fish photography kit for close up work). See my MSN Online Album for examples of work with this camera at:

My MSN Photo Album

[2] Fuji 6900 digital camera, only had it less than 24 hours, yet to read the manual fully and explore its features, but thus far it seems to deliver the goods. For my first pics taken with this camera go here ...

HP 735 Photosmart camera.

To me, it takes great pics. But, then again, this is my first digital camera.

It has an awesome macro mode:

P.S. If anyone can tell me what the name of that bug is in the second pic, I will greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
