I know human beings and fish can co-exist peacefully.

Agreed with Rob - Satanoperca jurupari. The head looks a bit deformed or disproportional from it's body though.

He'll need a little heavy feeding for a while, that slightly googly eyed look is from persistant underfeeding, probably for months. Might be worth giving him lots of food for a week and if theres still no weight gain assume he probably has roundworm or protozoa, and delouse him with antiparasite formula of similar.

That's definately a Jurupari, they are a nice peaceful fish but you would be able to feed it up much better if you had a sand substrate as they love nothing better than to spend 24/7 sifting for food.
Hope it goes well for you /:'

wow, $.99 is an amazing bargain... i got mine for $25 ...

its head isnt disproportionate, all eartheaters have relatively large heads in comparison to their body. also, thats a young jurupari. its body will eventually become fuller and look more proportionate with its head.

but anyway, they are great fish, and definitely my favorite fish. they are full of personality, and they are very peaceful, as cichlid crazy said.

If you have a genuine Satanoperca jurupari there, you are LUCKY. Many of the fishes that are SOLD as jurupari are something else. One possibility is that you have a juvenile Satanoperca daemon (in which case you're even luckier when it's adult because it's fins are spectacular!).

Cichlid Room pages:

Satanoperca jurupari

Satanoperca daemon

The reason I'm suspicious is because your specimen has a lot of iridescent spangles on its sides that don't seem to appear in adult specimens of genuine jurupari. However, for the definitive answer I'd call in Jason on this one. If anyone will know, he will.

Either way, if you have a Satanoperca of ANY species, you're in for a fun time keeping it. The ease or difficulty of maintenance of assorted species in the Genus is highly variable, with some being relatively straightforward, while others are as fussy as Discus.

This article]http://www.cichlidae.com/article.php?id=37[/link] on Satanoperca jurupari and [link=this article on Satanoperca daemon should prove invaluable. Note that if you happen to have Satanoperca daemon, the spectacular one, it's a blackwater species and notoriously difficult to keep alive without access to some fairly expensive filtration technology. Hence my urging you to contact Jason and obtain a definitive ID before committing yourself to what could be a spectacular, rewarding but expensive long term prospect.

Zach;

I'm not sure if I'm the only one who notices (maybe because my eyes are playing tricks to me ) but it's eyes appear too large for it's head and it also seems like theres a ridge where it's dorsal fin and forehead meets, something not prominent in Satanopercas.

That's probably one of the consequences of malnutrition.

Chances are once that fish has been given a good solid feeding regime for a few weeks, those features will disappear.

Hopefully. I think the eyes will shrink down since it's probably connected to poor water conditions in the tank it was previously in or some sort of bacterial infestation.

i have another one for you, looks similar but alittle larger, and this one has three dots down the body, two are in the back of the fish and the other is on the base of the tail.

I will get a picture of him soon. He seems to be like the other one, very peaceful. But way less irricent on the scales.

inkodinkomalinko,
are you sure the ridge that your talking about isnt the eye socket on the other side of the jurupari's head?

if it helps, heres a pic of my jurupari, back when he was no more than 3in. long-
http://s47.photobucket.com/albums/f187/zachf92/?action=view&current=Picture3005.jpg

but that i look at it, the jurupari's eye does look a bit large for his head.

and also Calilasseia, that definitely isnt a Satanoperca Daemon. if anything, the only other fish it could be is Satanoperca leucosticta. Also, some jurupari's do show iridescent spangles on the cheek when viewed from a certain angle.
