...And That's Why I Can't Have Shrimp | |

I didn't know what it was and neither did anybody else, but it was cheap so I bought it. The gangly first pair of claws reminded me of a Stenopus species. Anyways, I brought it home, acclimated, etc. After I popped it in the tank it did some weird jerking dance. Oddly, this was only while the male hawkfish was around. After it got tired of taunting the poor fish, it jumped into his mouth! The hawk was extremely surprised, and being a good citizen he tried to remove the shrimp from his jaws. Unfortunately, all he accomplished was bashing it into the sand until it died. Ashamed, the hawkfish fled into the rockwork. The next time I saw him, a single antennae was sticking out of his mouth. Poor guy. The (now dead) shrimp. It was carrying eggs at the time, probably after being knocked up by a deadbeat who abandoned her after hearing of her pregnancy. Knowing this, I'm going to have to rule the shrimp's death as a suicide. The unlucky victim: |

That one's kind of hard to forget. I wonder if that story is a forerunner of the kind he will tell to his kids someday? But seriously, sorry you didn't get to keep your new found treasure. |
