Good morning. My anacharis is growing across the surface of the water. Do I let it go on its merry way or can I trim it and plant the tops? Thank you.

Hi,
Actually, you can do either. Folks have posted here who
have pulled "ropes" of anacharis many feet long out of their
tanks. Others, as you suggest, snip the plant in halves and
plant the snipped ends in the gravel where it roots and
starts growing to the surface. Others snip the ends and
plant them.

yup...just as frank said...u can do both...i have anacharis in my tank and i just cut them...its easier for me to keep them not planted coz somehow...the root part just rot and let the restof the plant float..so..what i did is...put them in a dritwood decor's hole...they r not planted and they r not floating..just fixed in there...they enjoyed it, otherwise..i wont have a jungle now

Your choice Cavier, as Frank said

I go through phases where I refuse to let it get too long, and then there are times like the current that I simply do not care, and it is one less thing to have to worry about, so I let the stuff float (right now I don't think I have that much of it even planted)

hint of advice if you decide to snip it to "decent" lengths and plant it, get yourself some little hair rubber bands (I like the cloth ones) and band together several of the snippets on the bottom and then plant it...it makes it easier

I usually snip 'em in half...the tops that grow across the surface tend to be covered in algae because of the lights, so I usually toss 'em in a bucket.

Heidi, I do the same type of thing, but I use little strips of lead that bend around them to weight 'em down, too

Thank you for all the replies. I snipped them midway and replanted them. I didn't have an algea problem with them. I liked the overhead growth but I have a low-light tank and thought it would take too much light from the other plants by letting them grow haywire.

I have a rope that at last measurement was over 8' long I use it as a floater in my cichlid tank along with hornwort, two of the few plants they won't eat.

I also snip and have it grown planted in other tanks. If it's living in good conditions and happy it grows very fast. In my 10g I have to do a trimming at least once a week.

Theresa, your cichlids won't eat it? My cichlids would suck it up and it never lasted long in there...I think my cichlids were totally possessed when it came to eating the plants, put in a fake plant, and they tried to eat itMine were simply insaneboy how I miss them:#(
