Another log? 40G Planted | |
RCHC Small Fry Posts: 9 Kudos: 1 Votes: 2 Registered: 20-Feb-2006 | Hello FP! I have decided to do another log if anyone is interested. I am a ongoing member had to change login from Donkynutz to this(Mods asked me politly to do so). So the set up is a 40G heavily planted set up attempting to breed bolivians. Right now i have a couple different species of plants, i have bacopa, wenditi green, creeping charlie, hygro and some giant vals in the tank right now(still cycling), i have a 196 watts on top for lighting and eco complete as a substrate, Rena Xp2 for filtration and ebo jager 125w heater. I plan on running a co2 system now(just ran into a couple xtra $$)and was curious on suggestions for a good co2 system that will be under 125-150$? I have some essential ferts as it stands the flourish excel, flourish trace and a bottle of plant gro for iron with trace in it, i just ordered some kno3,kh2po4 and k2so4 from greg watson, so preety much i am almost there and just need the co2 and some more plants. So b4 i go posting pics and everything just want some general opinions and i guess the real question is does anyone actually want another log? |

Any reason why not? All logs are different and all of us have different goals. I am sure your tank will have its own niche and will be one more example on how things can (or cannot) be done. About your tank: - I don't know how much the CO2 stuff costs in Canada, but I am thinking that $150 would maybe be a little short (and really - if at all - then just a little). You should get a nice regulator that has a solenoid, a non-fixed pressure gage, maybe a bubble counter, a needle valve, and a check valve. I got This One. And then you need tubing and a CO2 bottle. The 5l version costs down here around $80 to $100. - Your light seens very sufficient. Does it come with 2 switches so you can have half the lights for only a few hours a day? What is the light's K value. - Besides the planted tank stuff, I personally believe your heater is a little underpowered. I would rather recommend a 200W heater. Now, let's see some pictures Oh and before I forget: Anyone who starts a new log first has to read through all the existing logs. And there will be a pop-quiz to make sure this has been done . Welcome to the log world, Ingo |

RCHC Small Fry Posts: 9 Kudos: 1 Votes: 2 Registered: 20-Feb-2006 | littlefish, thanx for the response, yeah i decided it was time to fork over the 20.00 and pay back for what i have learned on here. I am @ work right now but will get the pics up tonight, TRUST ME i have read both of yours, and tetra techs and Dr.Bonks and NowherMan6, im more of a silent reader. The lights are 6700k on seperate cords. That top gun set up was only 99.99 im assuming that is american but that would bring it to around 120.00 cad plus shipping should be alright i hope. Is it good to cycle the tanki with ghost shrimp, i wanted to try something different when it came down to cycling and decided with 10 ghost shrimp. Well thanx for the info on the heater, i will go get a 200W. Off for now, back to work. Peace |

LITTLE_FISH ***** Little Fish ***** Master of Something Posts: 7303 Kudos: 1997 Votes: 670 Registered: 20-May-2005 | RCHC, Hey, you forgot to add the CO2 bottle in your calculation, that is another $60 to $100 (depending on size and availabilty at your local welding supply shop). Your lights sound great, make sure you get two timers for them as well. About cycling with Ghost Shrimp: I haven't tried that, but I would assume it is not a good idea. When they are molding (get a bigger shell) they will be extremely sensitive to ammonia, if they are not anytime else anyway. Ingo |

Which reminds me I've been meaning to update that a little, I'm past LF's monthly mandated update. I found my 5lb CO2 bottle for just under 70 USD. I'm sure it could have been cheaper too If I had looked around a bit. Critical Fertilator: The Micromanager of Macronutrients |

Yeah my moms bf owns a shop so the co2 bottles and refills shouldnt be a problem. You gotta read mine too....if you can find it Sorry i just forgot yeah i was reading both the salt and the fresh as well. Hello again, just got back from work. So i had to go to the LFS b/c i bought 2 bags of eco-complete for the set up, and 1 bag when in great but when i put the second one in and added some water it stunk like skunk and was thick i continued filling it up and the stink was horrible, i called the LFS and they said this is the second time this has happened, so he took half a bag back and gave me 40.00 back, i was preety pleased. I picked up just a couple bags of fine black gravel a lil darker then the eco-complete and will be adding them in a bit. Then when i got home today my brand new heater just gave out on me ebo jager great heaters but must just been a bad one. Snapped a couple of pics before i put in the gravel and start actually planting the tank, these pics arent what i want to do(arrangement) they are just in there until i had time to actually do it. A couple questions though, is it alright to cap off eco-complete? And anyone know of a good fert regimes link? Any suggestions welcome. Well i tried adding pics but guess the membership hasnt fully gone through yet? Will get back in a bit |

But, about a good read regarding ferts, well we all (now you just have to find out who "we" are) believe into This Concept. I hope this helps, Ingo |

Thank you, Youre telling me, couldnt imagine if i had fish in it yet. Just rinsing the other gravel for it to go in, and the stuff i bought was leeching way too much black tannins wouldnt stop after 25mins of rinsing about 6-7 cups, so i had a little stash of other black gravel so i will use that instead this stuff is a little bit big, but with the eco underneath should be alright, off for now. |

Easy for me to say this, but we almost need something that would alert us to new these in specific keyword areas. Anyway good look with the tank. You have alot of light. In fact you have the same light I have on my 72g. I wouldn't bother using both bulbs until you have your co2 really going. The extra light will be wasted and you will be invaded by a swarm of protists I had a 46g with eco in it and it took about 5 months for me to realize it was corrupted. I was getting off the chart po4 levels and couldn't keep a cory alive. Get the co2 going and plant heavily, very heavily! My Scapes |

So far it seems like you are right on the ball. 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |

RCHC Small Fry Posts: 9 Kudos: 1 Votes: 2 Registered: 20-Feb-2006 | hello again, Tetra, I had a 46g with eco in it and it took about 5 months for me to realize it was corrupted,,,, that is crazy did you have alot of losses in the tank or just off the chart po4? Wings: i must have forgot about yours as well, there are just soo many, when im done reading almost 50 something or another pages i tend to forgot abot others but i have dffinatly browsed through yours as well. The tank is a 40G L 36" i beleive. So i went to the pet store to get a heater with more wattage and sure enough sold out , i can buy some cheap Elite heater for 25.00 but i will wait till i can get my hands on another ebo-jager. And the gravel i put in the tank yesterday leached so much the black came off the gravel and is almost shiny, soo many problems and so little time. Just a little question is there much of differences in co2 systems, then say a co2 system for pop or beer? And i can really only find 2 different co2 systems on the net on e being the milwaukee setup and the top gun, any major differences?? And Tetra Tech did u end up finding the 20th Cardinal? Thanx again. |

Welcome to log keeping, if you don't update every now and then they will remind you. Can't wait to see pictures. I'd like pictures of the tank and the hardware, it's nice to see for comparisons and ideas. "If you're afraid you'll make a mistake, you won't make anything." -Family Circus |

Wingsdlc Fish Guru What is this? Posts: 2332 Kudos: 799 Registered: 18-Jan-2005 | 40G Long is 48" 40G Breeder is 36" but your has more width that I wish I had with my 40 long. Don't worry about readding my log. It is not super cool like some of the others. I just wanted to play a long. Sorry to hear about your gravel. Is it all mixed with the eco or can you just pull it off the top? Start doing some water changes and I would think that it will go away. Take your time with everything. It is much easier that way. 19G Container Pond [IMG]http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y118/Wingsdlc/Ric |

They are fully submersible, black, and blend beautifully into the background, plus they function very well. a co2 system for pop or beer? What is that? They make a system for beer? Better get a good German Beer then, or one of Bensaf's brews . milwaukee setup and the top gunThe Top Gun is a modified Milwaukee, it contains a check valve. Hope this helps, Ingo |

RCHC Small Fry Posts: 9 Kudos: 1 Votes: 2 Registered: 20-Feb-2006 | hey guys im back i was just house sitting and dog sitting my cousins place. But none the less gettting a algae problem, will get pics when batteries finish charging, almost a brown dust and white hair algae, any suggestions on destroying it? As well just got my order of ferts from Greg watson, but the co2 hasnt came yet. Just a question can i use the ferts w/o the co2 or does the co2 need to be present? Everything in the tank is doing alright the vals are shooting runners all over the place the bacopa is thriving but the green wendetti has the brown dust over it so it looks horrible, none the less here are some pics just remember that this is just a before shot(S). Any comments or suggestions are welcome, and the "creepinbg charlie" plant is getting ripped out so i need another plant to replace that. |
