I have two that have the Eclipse hoods with twin 15w NO bulbs. I have two others that have the standard single 15w NO bulb, one with several Java Fern and the other only has Ricca floating on the surface, it's a grow out tank.

An 20 inch model should fit perfectly over a 10 gallon. This is what I use, and I get 28 watts of light. Not a great deal, mind you, but plenty to grow an array of various plants. Here is the model that I use:

Corallife Aqualight/20inch, 28 watt model. For the bulb, you will want a 6700K. I have had great results thus far.

Yes, that's correct you can, and you will have a good lighting source if you do so.

One 10 doing GREAT with a 15 watt flourescent bulb (java ferns, java moss, crypt. wendtii, water lettuce, pennywort, and an amazon sword). I just got compact flourescents (the kind that fit in an incandescent hood... I had the hood from back in my plastic plant days) for the other 10. Brand new, so still waiting to see how they do in that tank. I had a regular 15 watt flourescent bulb in that tank, but the plants didn't seem to do quite as well for some reason, and now trying to salvage some plants from the 20 downstairs that didn't do so well with my brichardis.

Edit: Klee, with your light coming in on the side, your plants may grow strangely (probably will bend toward the light) And you are losing a lot of light from the sides and top of where that bulb is.

It's funny looking, I know, but my hood doesn't have the sockets for screw ins. I guess necessity really is the mother of invention.

My 10 gal fry tank has one 11 watt CF bulb, 6700K,
no bulb on the other side, soon though..

It's a large java on left and smaller beside, and I'm working on a carpet of java babies across the rest of the tank, with some Pennywort taking over the left side and up the back left wall. (pics comin soon A couple small pieces of driftwood soon too, with Javas tied to those.

So will a bulb like this just plug into a regular hood, like can i buy two of them and just plug one into each side of the hood or do I need a special hood for them?

it's a 15W but has a 8000K something like that light temperature, in fact they have many kinds and sizes you can one that fits your needs, the only difference is that they don't come with the lamp but an electronic balast would work fine and are inexpensive.

what kind of lighting do you use?
I'm currecnt;y trying to set up a 10 gallon planted, with a 15 watt "good for plants" bulb. I'm stuck with this thing because I can't find a compact flourecent 18 inch bulb (apparently they start at 24".

They're screw in bulbs...they go in incandescent fixtures...

They sell them everywhere...just go look at the lighting section at any hardware store..they're little spiraly bulbs

One of the grocery stores here sells them too...

Where exactly do you get these compacts? I can't find 18 inch compact lighting to save my life. Especially online. :[

Java fern will grow just fine in that lighting. Its atractive, and it only needs a rock or piece of driftwood to attach to. Mine is perpetualy covered in beard algea though.

My 10g that's planted was a kit purchased from PetSmart. I use the lighting came with the kit. The substrate is gravel over flourite. The tank has amazon sword, melon sword, anacharis (floating), dwarf sag, a couple crypts, and a moss ball.

Mine has a 36 watt compact fluorescent bulb on it, just the right length (I think the bulb is about 18", so the whole fixture is almost exactly 20". Works very well.

I use the screw-in mini compacts in my ten gallon also.

I have a 10 gallon planted tank.
It had a double incandescent hood, I took those cruddy bulbs out n tossed em, and put in two 13w compact flourescent bulbs, GE 8.99 for a pair at Walmart.
I have 4.5 watts per gallon there.
