I just bought a lovely piece of driftwood that comes with a natural tunnel. I also purchased two java ferns. I remember reading somewhere that java fern does well attached to wood. I would like to do this, but how do you go about doing it? Suggestions please, I am anxious to set up a 10g for Valentino the betta.

Just use fishing line, a rubber band, or cotton thread to hold the java fern onto the wood for a couple of months.
The fern will attach itself and you can then ditch the band, thread or line.

Yup, those are all great suggestions. I used rubber bands with mine, and removed them once the rhizome started sticking to the wood on its own. I'm not entirely sure if it matters if the rubber bands are colored or not, but I used un-dyed just for safety's sake.

don't use cotton thread, it rots in a week or two, way too soon for the java fern to attach.

I've never had a problem with cotton thread, in fact it's one of my favorites. I've used fishing line but don't like that it won't degrade...and by the time the ferns attached itself I'm not going to cut it off, so I just hope the fish don't poke their eyes out on it .

Word of caution on rubber bands. Depending on how long it takes for your fern to attach itself the bands may begin to degrade. In which case you'll forever be finding little bits and pieces of rubber band in your tank .

pugperson.

I have been using 15lb fishing line and never a problem. I only remove it if necessary.
