Okay, I finally.....FINALLY got som plants I ordered back on Dec. 19th from AquariumGarden.com, which, BTW has some nice plants. Anyway, I have a couple of Q's for you plant gurus:

1. The two water sprite plants were in pots. Do I need to take them out and plant the root ball in the substrate or should I leave them in the pots?

2. Since there was such a delay in the ofder due to the holidays and such they sent me a free banana plant (which looks totally weird)....how in the world do I plant that, and where???? Front, mid, or back.

HELP!!

crazyred,

Out of the pot, for sure

EDIT: Remove any stuff that surrounds the roots in the pot

Banana Plant, into the substrate so that the banans stay above the substrate.

Hope it is not too late as 18 min have passed since your question ,

Ingo

Is this the plant your referring to?
http://aquiya.skr.jp/zukan/Nymphoides_aquatica.jpg

If so then you should know that it is a lily and will grow huge green and red leaves. Much like this...

Hope this helped.

Cool....yep, that's the plant. I did some more research this afternoon and it will only grow tll like that if you shove the little bananas all the way down into the substrate. If you leave them sticking 1/3 of the way out on top it stays short and grows slowly.....I think.

I shoved mine all the way in and within 2 days I had already grown a full lilypad. Extremely quick growing.

Hi,
Guys, the "bananas" are actually part of the root system
and serve the same function as a camel's hump. They store
"food reserves." You should not plant the bananas in the
gravel. Plant only the white roots that come out from the
bottom of the bananas.

When you get potted plants, you should always remove the
plant from the plastic pot, and then tease the plant roots
free from the "rock wool" that they were grown in under
running water that is the same temp as that of the tank
Clean off any dead/dying roots, and the same for any leaves.
Then plant where you want it to grow. When you change the
plant from the pot to the tank substrate, the plant will
take a little while to acclimate to its new environment.
During that time it will use up its stores of nutrients
and grow new roots as well as new leaves.

Frank

I didn't remove the wool from my hairgrass pots and the roots just grew out of it.

yeah dwarf grass is hard to dislodge i just removed what i could figured its better then nothing.

My three bananas are in my brackish water tanke and have all added a leaf since I added the salt, they are supposed to be brackish compatable, however they seem to be doing better in the salt but I also moved them from a coral gravel bottom to a sand bottom. Mine typically grow slow but I try to keep them buried 1/3rd the way but my fish tend to dislodge the largest one... I dont know why its always the biggest hahaa.

There was tons of that wool stuff around the roots of my water sprite.....took me forever to get it off.

I planted the bananas only part way down and one of my goofy fish must have been jacking with it, because it had come back out this morning......so I stuck it in a little further, but still left the top of the little green "bananas" sticking out. Hope this plant does well in my tank....it was free!
