Howdy folks.

Ok so I have a 4ft tank which i've had for years, but it recently got out of control and was covered in hair algae and snails and most my fish had died...

So about 2 weeks ago i decided I would bring some life back into it by basically tearing it down and starting again. I gave the canister filter a proper clean, put some nice new sand over the old sand and made it look pristine.

I then put in 7 very young tiger barbs who love it. on top of that i have 3 cories, 2 ottos and a zebra loach. So not many fish.

Now i have never had blue-green algae before, but it appeared about a week ago all over the driftwood. I've read maybe theres not enough water movement, but there is LOADS. i dont feed too much either and the light is normal. So what is causing it, is it dangerous, and how can i get rid of it??

Thanks guys
Tone

Hi,
There is nothing that will eat true BGA. You will have
to manually remove it.
Here is a site for the various types of algae include
the dreaded BGA:

Hi:

I had cyanobacteria (or blue green algae) and manual removal as well as husbandry did not do any permanent good. "Red Slime control" made by Blue Life USA finally did it. I don't know if it is available in the UK but look for it. It is sold for reef aquaria but works for frsh water as well. Within 36 hours you will notice the carpet of BGA detaching from the surface. Start removing manually and do a big water change (at least 40%) after 3 days. Following this schedule it is safe for fish and plants.
