what kind of care would plants need every month or year or week. because wouldnt you need to trim them if they were getting too big for your tank and taking over the other plants etc???

can anybody explain a routine plant care???

i do not have any plants but was wondering about it before i do get into plants instead of fakes.

If you haven't done any research on plants, I suggest you read FRANK's post in the sticky at the top of this forum. He gives great info on substrate, light, and plants. After you have read that if you still have more questions many here(including me) would be glad to answer them.

To answer your question - It all depends on the type of tank you are going for. Low light tanks require very little maintanence, while a high light CO2 enriched tank require weekly trimming and daily dosing of ferts.

This is the thread I mentioned. Frank and calilasseia give good info to help start you out on the right foot.

i did read the post and i would probably want to do a low light tank with little maintenance. i was just wondering what care the plants would need??? and also how would you clean the gravel and do water changes???

i also checked one of the sites that Frank gave and these are the plants it listed in a kit you could buy:
anacharis
rotala indica
blood stargrass
japanese fans
dwarf lily plants
dwarf onions
asian ambulia
java ferns
crypt walkeri
medium red-spot ozelot sword
tall sagittaria subulata

i have no idea what these look like or if they are used for background plants, space fillers or foreground plants. so if you have any pictures that would be nice and tell me what they are used for???

and here are some i have read a lot about in posts:
amazon sword
hornwort
frill
cambomba

could you tell me the same with these???
Thanx for you help.

tall sagitteria subulata, -

This is called Sagittaria Pusilla, or full name is Sagittaria subulata var. pusilla . Also called Dwarf Sag.. Longer and thinner leaves then the regular dwarf sag, a slightly easier plant and a good candidate for a low light tank.. Very graceful midground carpet plant.
Mine are doing nicely and sending a few runners but a little pale due to needs more iron and maybe potassium but doing better then the regular sag. This variety is not common in my area, found in a small store near my parents and lucked out. Expect 5-8 inch growth.

To start of with I personally think you should start doing some research on those listed plants, you can do this by doing a Google on each plant. There are several good books on plants as well.
The "little maintenance" is another factor alltogether this will depend on the choice of plants.

All plants require plant food and light to survive rating from basically very low light & low plant food to the plants that require high light and plenty of food including Co2.

You must select plants that all have the same requirements.

Even with my experience I spent many hrs researching the few species to add to my 10g tank.

You have taken the first step by starting the research work

kj - As keith said you need to do a little research on these plants. I noticed a few that were medium to high light plants. The "blood stargrass" or Heteranthera zosterifolia, the rotala rotundifola "indica", Cabomba, and frill or myriophyllum, are all out of the question for a tank much less than 2wpg, and some would require even more than that.

Check out each plant on [link=tropica's website]http://www.tropica.com" style="COLOR: #FFFF00[/link] or search for low light plants. you can also google these plants as keith suggested.

thank you so much, that saved me a little bit of time and the frustration of finding names and not knowing if they were correct.
