Your question could be a easy answer if we knew what
the 35-50 watts was going on.
Are you talking a 1/2 gallon tank, or a 55 gallon tank?

As FRANK said, and also, are you talking cheaper as in complete setup of these lights? Are you talking cheaper bulbs? And are you asking about cheaper as in right now, or over the course of time you have them on your tank? As some more expensive bulbs will last longer than some cheap ones. Some setups will be cheaper to start, but will cost more in electricity over time. etc.

well first step is its goin on a 29gal, cheap to start up (within the next month or two) willing to upgrade later.
