I have been doing some research, trying to find out how to get enough light on my 125g. From what I've read, I should use compact flourescents. Since my tank came with two 36" strips, can I use compacts in them? Or do I need to buy all new fixtures? I also have a shoplight that maybe I could use. I would like to end up with at least 3wpg. The whole lighting thing really confuses me, so please use small words and take me step by step.:%):%)

Power compact fluorescent will require special fixtures, and you're going to be rather dismayed about the price of them, unfortunately.
I get my lights from that fish place: http://www.thatpetplace.com/Products/KW/F52/PgNo/1/Class/Fish+Supplies+Lighting+Fixtures/Shopay00.aspx
You should be able to find what you need in an already assembled hood, however, you should expect to pay up to $400 for an adaquate lighting setup. Or you could create your own light hood using retrofit kits (buying all of the pieces seperately and unasembled, then putting it all together, wiring, etc., yourself). This will probably be only slightly less expensive, and require more work and know-how on your end.

There are other places to get PC lighting stuff, so look around and find something that fits both your budget and the work you're willing to put into it.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

if you plan to do retrofits, AHsupply.com sells resonable priced high quality kits that you can usually fit iside the shell of your orriginal fixtures. you would probably need 4 96watt bulbs. if you only have two strip fixtures you will have to make your own shell.
