I just got some moneywort and am treating it for snails (noticed one on a root) so I have 3 bunches in a one gallon jar with 25 pennies.

How many pennies, and how long does it take to kill off the snails and eggs?

Also, I didnt' add conditioner to the jar before I added the plants, what harm might that do to the plants?

^_^

Hi,
I don't know that there are any published papers
on using copper pennies (using Cu) to kill snails.
Nor is there anything published on how many copper
pennies it takes to raise the Cu in a given container
to a lethal level.
The easiest, and most sure, is to simply by "snail
be gone" or something similiar and follow the
dosage directions. I'm sure it is also faster
than your method.

Since you are killing things, I would not bother
with conditioner in the container. I would, however,
very throughly wash the plants off before placing them
in an aquarium. And, expect a set back when you do.

I've heard of the copper penny thing, but am pretty certain that the penny has to be of a certain year or before to contain enough copper to actually do anything ( dunno what year that is, sorry). http://www.fishprofiles.com/interactive/forums/thread.asp?id=42545 contains a couple links that I know of for tried and true methods of disinfecting new plants, treating them for snails, etc .

any US penny minted before 1982 will be 100% copper, otherwise they're zinc with copper plating.
