I have a couple of pieces of corkscrew val in my 55g that until recently were doing fantasticaly. It was growing so quickly that I was trimming it weekly and was producing little plant runners all over the tank.
Now it seems it has slowed down alot in growth and is losing leaves.
Can someone point me in the right direction to get these vals back to healthy and growing?

Thanks

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Hey Lindy,
Not sure if it'll help but falstaf has also been seeing some misbehavior in his vals. No firm conclusions in [link=his thread]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Planted%20Aquaria/59277.html?200505111803" style="COLOR: #EB4288[/link] as of yet but I'm watching it....mainly because I'd been considering vals for one of my tanks and wanted to be prepared!

Thanks Babel, I did spot that thread. I'm not adding fertiliser to the tank at all atm. Maybe I need to start adding something.

Lindy, you mention you have trimmed the Vals. How did you do this ?

Sometimes when a Val gets too tall people trim them by cutting the top part of the leaf. This is a bad way to do it. The leaf will die off if handled this way. Too much of this can damage the plant beyond repair.

Oh dear, i'm a bad plant keeper! So how do I trim the leaves then? When the plants were growing well there was an excess usually of 4-5 inches floating on the water surface. Should I learn to accept the excess instead?

Hi Lindy,

The only way is to either live with the excess or remove the entire leaf by cutting it as close to the crown as possible.

If it's not causing too much shading which is harming the other plants I'd just leave them.
