This set of questions here is a perfect example. Explaining a situation more detailed is very helpful and for sure will conclude in an audience that is more willing to answer as they would not have to write an entire book to cover all options that come to mind. In your specific case: plants come in very different shapes, sized, requirements, and - as such - trimming routines. Can you specify what plants we are talking about? And what is the purpose of the trimming (creating a nice scape, going on vacation, or what) ? How do the plants look now (like leaves at bottom are fine or rotting) ? And there may be a few other pieces of information that may need to be known to help you out. Hope this helps, Ingo ![]() |

This ensures that the ba system. Then cut the plant half way up the stalk, or, as Ingo suggests, a couple of inches down from the top. Either way works although Ingo's way will generally produce a "bushier" plant. The remaining stem with the root system will grow another top or two and start growing toward the surface again, while the top section will grow roots and start growing toward the surface as well. When the origional stalk becomes dark green compaired to the cuttings, or when it becomes "leggy" (roots growing from the stalk down to the gravel) then it is time to replace the origional stalk with a new top. When one purchases any stem plant that is sold in bunches, you should: Rinse them off in running water that is the same temp as the tank they are going into. Clean off any dead/dying leaves. Clean off any dead/dying roots. Snip off the last inch of the stalk to give the plant a clean break from which the new roots will grow. Then plant them, generally in groups of three, in the gravel. Hold the stem(s) between your thumb and forefinger and using the nail side of the forefinger create a groove of about an inch to an inch and a half by pushing your forefinger through the gravel where you want the plant to be located. Lay the stem(s) within the groove and while holding them there, push the gravel back over the groove with the other hand, smoothing it out and burying the stem(s) and the plant(s) in position.
