I think it's a good option for small tanks. in larger ones it can be a PITA because you have to use double bottles but other than that i go for it.

What really matters is the defuser or the reactor.

Not having the money for pressurised CO2, I cannot say that I'd chose DIY over pressurised. However, I can say that DIY does in fact work, even in my 38G tank.

As falstaf said, the important part is the means to dissolve the CO2 into the water.

I do not have it main reason I have too much water movement, it is also a 5ft tank. My Anubias plants seem to do extremly well with out it anyway.

I would say Bernard is the person to ask more about it.

Neither trash nor treasure...

It does help your plants, if your tank is not big enough. I have two tanks, one with a DIY setup, and another with pressurised CO2 tank. DIY is not as good as pressurised, but it does make plants do grow a bit faster than without it.
