I called my step dad to ask him where I could find components to build my own Co2 system. He got into an argument with me asking why do I want Co2 in my tank. I said to help the plants grow. His come back was "Why don't you buy plants that don't need Co2 to grow!" I told him to describe the photosynthesis processto me, and then he up on me. I can't understand how a 40 year old man in college can't understand plants need carbon dioxcide to grow!!!! ]]]

Hi,
Actually, in a sense, he is right.

You DON'T need to inject CO2 into a tank to make the plants
grow. If you stick with plants that fall within the
lighting available (low light plants in tanks with 1.5
wpg, etc.) the plants will thrive. It's really only when
you put the plants into "overdrive" by upping the WPG to
3+ that you need to inject CO2. With the higher light, they
try to grow more, and faster. That growth is limited by
the amount of available Carbon, and we inject CO2 to
increase the available Carbon.

If you stick with low to medium demand plants, and keep the
light around 2 wpg, your plants will do just fine. If you
want them to really thrive then add CO2 and watch them
take off. But, it's not a necessity.

Frank

Yes Frank you are correct. But it really was't the fact of injecting Co2 that made me laugh... it was the fact that he said buy plants that don't need co2 to grow.

Well be patiant, not many people actualy keep in mind the photosinthesis process in the top of their heads. When i first got my Co2 system i was asked by the guy in the company if i was growing pot in my closet, I never before heard that was a way to grow it, so there you go, i guess people do have their own minds.

Good point falstaf. I was going to mention that.

At your dads age he was a kid when doing such a thing was hip, and it's probably got something to do with his concern.

Ask him if it is, and assure him your not doing that.

The sad thing was I explained the whole ordeal to him, for the aquarium, the process, and the purpose and he was still confused. The funny thing is he has everybody in my family convinced that he is a genius.
