i have a dwarf Gouromi upside down catfish some dwarf frogs 3 schools of fish 2 mystery snails and one algae eater
i know the Gouromi and the Catfish should have the floating plants. but what kind and why should they have them?
i have a bit taller 28 gal tank with grass and some other plant that i cant remember it is like a single thin plant with round leaves coming off it that i have a bunch together to look like one plant.

also i have an air stone not sure if that would make a difference in the floating plant

Well, besides look nice, there are a few reasons you might want floating plants. Besides looking nice, floating plants provide shelter for timid top-dwelling species of fish. They also provide a bit of food for some species to nibble on - I'm sure your gourami might appreciate some.

You can use most stem plants as floating plants. They absorb nutrients through the water column, rather than through roots in the substrate, so they'll grow just fine floating. Good plants to use in your set-up may be Elodea, Watersprite, Hornwort or duck-weed.

as mentioned...it does make a difference...its giving the tank a "cozy" feeling for the inhabitants...

i have elodea, hornwort, duckweed and watersprite as floating plants...my fave is watersprite.

As a side note, if you're running an HOB filter, my experience has been that it's likely to tear up hornwort getting it stuck in the intake. Stem plants that reach across the surface might do a better job.

It is very difficult to photograph a floating plant (Water Sprite) as it is directly under the light. I took this from the top as you can see it is very dense. I toss out a good handfull every month, it grows that fast.

The temperature is controled by your heaters. What it would do it could reduce the light heat but this would also be compensated by the heaters.
