Anyone know if you should trim the tops of giant hairgrass before planting. Just received some in pots from aquariumplants.

betta,

I was actually talking about giant hairgrass, but I believe if you cut the tops of the dwarf hairgrass it develops faster runners.

Some plants do better when the tops are cut as you trim the roots as well.

By trimming the tops it is less for the roots to feed.

Trimming the roots removes any damage to the root tips and give them a good start.

Depends.

A lot of hairgrass sold is emmersed growth. This will brown and rot as new growth comes in. It's easily recognised, the emmersed form usually has little seed balls.

If it's emmersed - plant and cut, but leave a couple of inches at the bottom.

If it's submersed growth don't cut. Usually aquatic grass plant leaves react badly to trimming and the entire leaf dies.

Some days you're the pigeon and some days you're the statue.

Remember that age and treachery will always triumph over youth and ability.
